Thouhg tI would share what I have found...
My step son is bipolatr . I have found a great book called the Bipolat Child By Demitiri Paplols MD & Janice Paplols. It help understanding but do not tell you what to do durring the uncontrolable rages episods. On the web I found a company called Brain matters. They show youa normal brain and a brain that is Bipolar.Dr Phil even had a show about bipolar
This a real prblem in the world today.
Tracy if your son is older he might be helped by a web called Bipolar Happends by Julie Fast. she help you throught mania depresssion and to find out what are the triggers. As an adult this can also help you se it in your son.
I know what you are going throught and you are not alone! I have been knocked to the ground , sworn at , and more. When he has calmed down he gets so mad at himself he wants to die.I was told to do a holding technique but that is hard!. You can get kicked in the face head butted. I do not think I can do it. My husband tried and ended up all black and bule and so did his son.The DCF gets call becuse they think YOU are hurting your kid. What is a parent to do??? He has beed in patient a few times. Right now life has been good. He can not have sugar in this house but ht occasonal hiolday treat . Vidoe time is limited to 3hrs. a day( , more tha I like but better than all day!!!
We give him Omega III = fish oil this was recomended by the healthfood store nutritianist. I was been moths since we have had a violent out burst...Thank GOD!!!
They are always changing his meds . He is 13 now so in puberty the body chemicals are always changing. Once that is done they will be able to regulate hime better. They say he could even grow out of it but it does not happen very often. The brain pattern can change ater puberty .
Sometimes I can tell he is building to a rage and try to overt him from whatever he is doing .Some times it is as simlple as touching him in the check and saying I love you know matter what. That has helped a few times.
I hope I have helped some.
God belss you & give you peace!!

Dietary changes
Avoiding food dyes and additives According to a recent report issued by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a small body of research (including a 1982 study by the National Institutes of Health) suggests that food dyes — and possibly preservatives, as well — can aggravate behavior problems in a small percentage of children with ADHD. You can test this theory in your own child's case by eliminating foods and vitamins containing colorings with names like tartrazine, Red 40, and Yellow 5 from your child's diet for several weeks to see if your child's behavior or mood improves. Many foods that contain these ingredients, such as cookies, candies, children's cereals, brightly-colored beverages, and soft drinks, should probably not make up a large part of your child's diet anyway.

Avoiding salicylate and food allergens A few experts advocate eliminating foods that contain the naturally occurring substance salicylate, such as apples, oranges, berries, apricots, and tomatoes. (A regimen called the Feingold Diet, created in the 1970s by Benjamin Feingold, an allergist, advocates eliminating foods that contain salicylate as well as food dyes and additives from the diet of children with ADHD. Studies on the effectiveness of this regimen have had widely varying results.) Several experts also believe that food allergies may aggravate the symptoms of ADHD and recommend eliminating foods they believe may be triggers, such as wheat, corn, chocolate, and eggs, but very little research has been done on this. If you suspect that your child may be allergic or behaviorally sensitive to any of these foods, talk to a nutritionist or allergist before removing them from his diet to ensure that your child is still getting all the nutrients his growing body needs.

My 7 year old daughter has ODD. My husband and I are at the end of our rope. She has always been a difficult, stubborn child but the last few years have been so bad that we just don't know what to do. Therapy hasn't helped (for her or us). We need help.

I find it very hard to believe a 5 year old can be diagnosed with bi-polar. The diagnosis of bi-polar is made from behaviour patterns over a number of years. Take away the time that the child is not talking, and thats only a few years for diagnosis. They havent got a long enough history. I just dont believe it. Ive never heard of a 5 year old with bi-polar.

....and bi-polar is also a VERY serious mental illness. Its not a behaviour disorder. The drugs you have to be on for bi-polar usually consists of a cocktail of extremely strong medication.
So the doctor better be sure as hell that the child HAS bi-polar before diagnosing and medicating.

Hey Everyone,

I have come accross something that might be of interest to us all. I recently read a book on the beneficial bacteria in our digestive systems and have found out that after using antibiotics we should be replenishing our intestinal flora with beneficial bacteria. Why am I telling you this? My son had four rounds of antibiotics earlier this year and has some symptoms including an itchy bum, which my md treated with anti worm meds with no success and now I've found out that when then antibiotics kill the infection they also kill the beneficals that keep the yeast in our gut from overpopulating....there are many symptoms including ADHD BEHAVIOUR, irritated bowels, allergies, skin rashes such as psoriosis(spelling?) excema, restlessness, foggy brain, inattentiveness and a host of other things. Search this and see what you come up with. I have him and my husband on lactobacillus acidopholus and Bifobacterium (beneficials) and hope this will help. Also the yeast feeds on sugar and yeast so if your kid seems to become less agitated on sugar...maybe there is a link. =

Candidiasis is the name of the state your body is in when there is too much yeast. the yeast actually attach to the lining of the stomach and increase the size of perferations (which are already there)and you do not absorb vitamins and minerals the as well as you should. Also your body trying to fight of the yeast so your immune systom becomes weaker and is more susceptable to colds and flus. When in this state the immune system thinks it is under attack and when allergens such and dust, and pollen are inhaled the body immediately tries to ward off the "attack" by producing the allergic sysmptoms such as runny nose and congestion, etc. which is really your body trying to flush the "bad guys" out of its system. =

I have a 4 year old with ADHD and Possibly Bipolar. The pediatrician is addressing one issue at a time. Does anyone have input as to how young bipolar can be diagnosed?
My son is one Dexadrine Spansule (time released) and it does help with the adhd behaviors. We had to change the meds from dexadrine non time released because it caused tics. the tics are not present with the time released formula. If anyone has advise on what helps with controlling the anger/violent fits please email me at [email protected]

mom2ways, behavioural counsellor working in the home with how to deal with outburst properly. also social skills programs, and keeping strict routine, consistancy is very important for adhd kids. They need wornings what is happening next transitions are horrible. for example if your child is into tv or an activity dont just walk up and turn tv off and say it time to go , you need to say in five minutes the tv needs to be off, we are going to the store, tell me what going to happen? kid replys back i need to shut the tv off because were going to the store. that kind of thing. hope its somewhat helpful

Can any of you please tell me what your children were like as babies/toddlers? I know ALL toddlers are active, but I do worry about my 2 year old son who seems out of control most of the time. I have mentioned to doctors my concerns, and I always get the answer that all toddlers are active. I know some of his behaviors are not normal so I am just wanting some feedback of what some of your children were like as toddlers. THANKS!

help, my son was very extreme, as infant always cried in car rides till he was 18 months then from there he always hit kids know i understand he did it because his social skills were behind he wanted kids to play with him so he hit them and also i began to realize he had a spatial issue that if kids got to close in his personal space he would hit them, when he was about four i started to figure this stuff out. although when he was 2 who could apeak and comunicate full sentances somehow he didnt pick up certain socail cues on how to socialize with others. he would run out to road even when he was in jk, no fear of anything, touched stuff that was hot, climbed on everything even the side of a bride when he was four, tried to hang out of an upstair window, always breaking toys, facinated with sharp objects and would chace you with it, i had to make sure things were locked away. very rough, very curious, fearless and no remorse or understanding that what he was doing was harmful to others and himself. it was as though his impulses took over, but now hes on meds and has had behaviour counselling and extentive programms to aid in social skills he no longer acts like this, he no longer hits, he has friends now, he listens he has remorse and is sadden when he sees someone hurt. its been great. i no longer feel my son will be locked up in a jail when hes older, i truly feel he will become a great member of society and he says he want to be a scientist lol. hope this is helpful if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I am in the same place as you at the moment with my son who is nearly four.
I have been asking for help from the time he was about 2 they did find some of his problems were due to hearing (glue ear) and after grommets were placed in his left ear he did seem to get a little better. so maybe check ears because it was the last thing that i thought of. I

I got a liilte child who is having behavior problems and the doctor wants her checked out. I notice she does not get much sleep for one. I don't think she sleeps like she should. She has dark circles around her eyes alot almost about 1 week out of a month. Her tempers are not he best either. But on the other hand she can be sweet and lovely to you when no other one is around. How do you know what she has?
