I have two daughters. My oldest is in first grade and is 6 years old. She is failing because she cannot sit still and cannot concentrate. After several teacher conferences, the teacher asks me if she has trouble doing the homework, and all I can say is "I don't know because I can't get her to concentrate and do it." Homework (and just about everything else) is a HUGE battle with her. I end up in tears almost every day. My other daughter who is 3 1/2 is completely opposite. I think of her as "normal". I have always sensed that something is different about my oldest daughter. Do you think she could have ADD or ADHD? (Not sure what the difference is) At first I just thought it was a behavioral problem, or just her personality (strong-willed), but now I think it is something more. I cannot even take her to church anymore. I don't want people to not be able to be around her. Its affecting our marriage and more importantly her life. Friends and family have told me I need to have her tested, but I don't know where to go. Need advice please.

It's very possible she has ADD or ADHD. Go to a child psychiatrist who specializes in ADD/ADHD. Any of the larger hospital/clinic networks have them on staff. They will have you and teachers fill out questionnaires about her behavior. To be diagnosed as ADD/ADHD, it will manifest itself in all locations (i.e. not just at home). Your school system also would have specialists who can come and do tests as well. I would call the Special Education dept. and ask who to contact to get this done. Hope that helps.

I can not say for sure if your daughter is ADHD/ADD or not, but I do strongly suggest you consult with her doctor or family doctor. That needs to be your first course of action. Your doctor will help you, either by diagnosing her or by referring you to someone who can. Please start there as soon as possible.

Thanks for the reply. I made an appt today with a specialist. He is sending forms to her teachers. I am very nervous about the whole process. Does anyone know what I should expect from the appt? The nurse/clerk said the appt. could take up to two hours.

I can't tell you what to expect, but I can tell you what my experience was. Normally when we would be at appointments, I would be very nervous and anxious about my son's behavior, and would be on top of him to be sure he behaved correctly and calmly. I decided when I went to the first appointment for the ADHD diagnosis, I would just sit back and let my son be himself. That way the doctor could see how my son truley behaves. I calmly answered the doctors questions, but never jumped up to get my son, or calm him down, or make him sit down. I let the doctor dictate what he wanted to see and have my son do. It was very hard for me to do this, but it worked great for the doctor, because he got a true reading of my son's behavior. So my suggestion is to just sit back and let your doctor and daughter interact together. Hope this helps.
