My 6 year old was recently diagnosed with ADHD. He performs well academically however has always had a serious inability to sit still / listen in school (doing activities he may not want to do but has to do). MY QUESTION: We are planning to start him on a low dose of Metadate (Methylphenidate) and would appreciate any experiences/advice regarding your children on the medication (or related medication - ie ritalin) (positive?), side effects (how serious were they?) etc....

My son has been on Metadate since 2nd grade (he's now in 6th) and we started out on 10mg which did great for the first 2 years. We have now increased the amount to 30mg. He is around 55" tall and weighs roughly 87 pds. The only negative side effect for us was that he wouldn't eat lunch at school because the Metadate suppressed his appetite during the day. We always made sure he had a healthy full breakfast and he was always ready for a snack when he came in from school and he always ate dinner easily. Also, not that this is a negative, but he was able to stay up quite a bit later at night if he had taken his medicine that day. Other than those 2 things, we absolutely love the Metadate, obviously, or we wouldn't still be on it. ;) I hope this helps and good luck :)
