My nephew is ADHD & Bi-polar (7yrs old) and I was looking for some info. What it seems I've found is a bunch of people who think any child lashing out is ADHD. Maybe we should look at the way we are raising our children to see if there is something we can do to improve their behavior. Pardon the silly reference, but are all the kids on "Super Nanny" ADHD? No. The parenting skills that are learned go a long way to changing the child's behavior. Perhaps before we assume every rebellious act is ADHD, we should HONESTLY look at the way we interact (or don't interact) with our children to see if there is an underlying reason for their "acting out". Call me crazy or say I don't know what I'm talking about, but before we get kids hooked on meds, isn't it worth it FOR THEM to look at OUR behaviours? I'm sure there are some of you who's children do have ADHD, and I wish you the best. Some others need to look at the structure in your CHILDS life, the dicipline, the love, the attention they receieve - and by all means be honest with yourselves before committing to meds.

I have found that I put my son who is also three on omega 3 and he has changed so much, he is better and I was told they think he has ADD and to me he doesnt. So for those who's meds dont work, look into natural ways, Omega 3 and 6 work well with increasing the brain flow and has proven to help cure ADD for children

Three is an early diagnosis; however it does happen. Being a teacher I am very familiar with all the signs and symptoms of ADD/ADHD, etc. so I knew my son had ADHD when he was three. Problem was, I couldn't get any doctor to test him. They all said that all 3 and 4 yr. olds display symptoms of ADHD because they are all hyperactive and have short attention spans. However, my son's behaviors were typical of his age, just on a scale of 1-10, he was a 10 or more- all day every day. I knew he needed medication. Finally, last year when he was five we had him formally diagnosed and put on meds. He is a completely different child. We actually like him now :) hehe

Good luck! Trust your own instincts!

I have a 3yr old too who has been disagoned by ADD and the doctor did that by just watching her for 15min but he did say the only way to be sure is to have her in a daycare setting
My thought is she is too young to determine that
She is just full of energy and hard to control

Our son had MAJOR allergies (mold, dust, trees, ragweed) and we were lucky enough to figure it out before he turned 3.5 years old. If we listened to our pediatrician, he would have been on ADHD/ADD drugs and "labeled" by 5 - his life would be a different life if we just rolled over and "accepted" what everyone thought/said was normal. As a parent, it is your job to protect your children and guide them the best that you can and if something is wrong YOU need to figure it out and resolve it - whether it is a physical problem or mental, etc. - not a teacher, pastor, daycare - they do not know your child the same. I made a list of things that I would investigate 100% (allergist, ENT, mental) and luckily for us an allergist was the first thing on the list even though our ped. said otherwise. Trust and listen to YOUR instincts. Incidentally, we had MOLD in our a/c air handler in our attic - which we found by accident. Probably the root of all of his problems for about 1/2 of his life.

I'm not sure what the problems seems to be with my son. I havent done much research but i do think there is something different about him form my other two childeren. My son is three and his two year old sister can run circles around him. He doesnt want to settle down to do things right, like eating his dinner without spilling it all over himself or the floor. Or even drink from a cup. He's too crazy all the time. His energy level is soooo high from the second he opens his eyes untill i force him to go to bed for the 7th time at 10pm. He throws fits for naps and refuses to stay in his bed. Just recently he's started taking his aggrivation on his sisters but its not severe. Our biggest problem is his energy level just seems inhuman? I'm constantly running after his messes because his attention span is maybe 3 min. then he's on to the next thing. Is this just the difference between boys from girls? Could he be behind? His vocabulary is excelent but hes not ready to be potty trained. He doesnt throw tempertantrums unless ordered to sit in the naughty chair, but has picked up the wonderful habbit of throwing things all of a sudden. My girls are ANGELS compared to him. I cant keep up and i'm exhausted!!!! Any advice?

Just another example...This morning i watched my two year old sit at the table with her own cup full of Apple Cider and didnt spill a drop sitting there for about 5 min. My son-on the other side of the table chose to spend his 5 min smearing his peanut butter all over his arms and legs and head! Then when my mother got him down for me he ran like a bat outa hell into the formal living room and dove into the chair wiping his hands clean. I'm pulling my hair out. I'm trying to make him a doctors appointment this morning i cant do this alone any longer.

Did you have testing done ? If so where and what type. My son was diagnoised at four but I noticed lots of signs and requested some tests. That is after talking to three differnt doctors. We went to a childrens hospital and did three days of testing. He is 15 now and I'm glad we took action early on but some doctors can and have diagnoised wrong.
Good Luck

I think you have to be careful about rushing to diagnose young children. It's frustrating and I know that you want an answer but a bad answer is worse than no answer.

Our daughter was uncontrollable and inconsolable for a period of time. On more than one occasion, we were advised to consider whether it was hyperactivity. We investigated further. Long story short, she had a breathing problem that we didn't know about - she wasn't sleeping like she should and it was causing her to be overtired and ridiculously crazy during the day.

I think you need to consider the whole range of behaviors and options before rushing to conclusions. And ALWAYS get more than one opinion before putting your small child on medication. Doctors can make mistakes - especially when they only see your child for a short period of time.

I'm no doctor, but as a parent with good old fashion common sense, I would have to agree with your skepticsm regarding your doctor's diagnosis. How accurately can any sound doctor diagnose a disorder like ADHD after just 3 years of life, where most of that time has been simply about their naturally self absorbed little universe? As a parent I would definitely keep my on on it, however, I would also be VERY careful Not to label, anticipate, or settle for that type of diagnosis at this early, and tender age.
