My son is 11yrs old and severe autistic. He has very few words. He is consently yelling for no reason I can understand. He can be doing something he enjoys and then he starts yelling its very hard to stop him. I have talked to his doctor and the only response I get is to increase his medication. I want to help him but I dont know how. I have tried to distract him but as soon as he gets into this mood its hard to pull him out. It almost seems like he gets stuck and cant get out.

Hello, do you have a behavioru therapist that works with your son. They usually know how to help. What kind of medication is your child on? I have 3 autistic children and I had my 2 little ones on ritalin, even though it was on 5mg 2x a day, it was increasing almost every 3 months, so I decided to take them off. The problem I have with my 10yr old is that he bodyslamms or headbutts, and his behavriour therapist has helped decrease this behaviour. What therapies do you have for your son. Please email me at [email protected] if you would like.

Hi md3boys, Both my kids were prescribed Ritalin, they told me it was supposed to help them focus, which it did, Jake, who is considered my most severe, started giving me more eye contact, calmed down, listened more, same thing with Sabrina, she responded more, listened and stopped her screaming, it helped both in school alot, unfortunately, almost every 3 to 4 weeks, they kept increasing the dosage, as the 5mg 2x a day did not help, it seemed that their body was getting used to this drug and it was not affecting them anymore, bottom line when I decided to take them off the medication they were taking about 6 pills a day. I guess it did help and I choose to believe that it might have opened up something in their brain, because now they both are doing really really good, Jake is starting to say words and he is still giving us eye contact. I am not saying it is a miracle and it has cured them, because it did not but it did help them. Everytime I log in and read the emails, I noticed that alot of your parents always talk about medications that I have not heard, maybe Ritalin is approved for autism here in California?
