I HAVE A SOON TO BE SIX YEAR OLD AUTISTIC SON. HE DOES NOT TALK. HE IS NOT TOLIET TRAINIED. HE DOES GIVE KISSES AND CAN BE VERY LOVING BUT ALSO ABUSIVE. I THINK HE GETS THIS BEHAVIOR FROM HIS FATHER BECAUSE MY SON'S FATHER ABUSES ME. I AM NOT PROUD OF IT, BUT MY SON REACTS MOST TO HIS FATHER. MY SON IS VERY AWARE AND HIS TEACHERS THINK THAT HE IS READY TO BE INTREGRATED TO REGULAR SCHOOL. I THINK NOT. I WANT TO ESTABLISH A GOOD, ESTABLISHED, CHRISTAIN HOME LIFE FOR MY SON. I HAVE FAILED IN ALL AREAS. I NEED HELP. I NEED TO GET AWAY FROM MY SON'S FATHER. I HAVE BEEN SYSTEMICALLY TURNED DOWN ON "ALL" OUTSIDE HELP WITH MY SON AND I AM AT THE ABSOLUTE END OF MY ROPE. I LOVE THE LORD, AND I KEEP PRAYING, BUT THE REALITY IS MY SON IS AUTISTIC, MY FAMILY DOES NOT AKNOWLEDGE ME, MY ↑ |

WED SEPT. 18,2006 8:45pm HELLO MONDO, Thanks for your comment . I've been taught more by my autistic son... than any teacher I've ever had in my life! He's taken me to awareness levels... most people never attain... sharpening all my senses. It sounds like you also are aware of the treasure in your mist. GRATEFULLY KAREN ↑ |

P.S It's me again Mondo, I just read your son uses sign language Where did he learn it? When did he learn it? What kind of sign language is it? Why do you think it works so well for your son? Can your son read? Can your son phy. speak? GRATEFULLY KAREN ↑ |

Hi Karen, My son is 19 yrs old and had babbling and words up until about age 4 then gradually disappeared. We began ASL(American Sign Language) in about grade 3 but it didn't get strong until perhaps grade 5- this opened doors to him because all of a sudden he could INITIATE his requests/needs, etc. I do not think he can read although i suspect he does recognize words. ↑ |

SUN SEPT 24, 2006 Hi Mondo, Thanks for the data on ASL, I was always sorry I didn't follow my heart and teach Cliff ASL! My autistic son does not sit in front of me read, but in school he is taught data through reading and in his room I know he reads and writes because HE CAN READ. He is 20yrs old phy. but is between 5-7 yrs old mentally and so reads... on that level, when he writes, plays all his games and computor as well, (that all takes reading) If your son can do any of these things ..........he can read. I am very grateful to speak with you and others about our beloved children... no matter how tall they are getting! (Cliff is 6ft now) GRATEFULLY KAREN ↑ |

Hi Karen, My son Jonathan is 6'2' and a handsome lad at that! HE DOES NOT WRITE OR USE COMPUTERS AS YOUR CLIFF DOES, AT ONE TIME HE WAS INTERESTED IN CERTAIN COMPUTER GAMES BUT NOW HE DOESN'T want much to do with them. He loves movies of animals, bears, dogs; airplane movies. Loves water. I too am very glad to have the opportunity to talk with other parents about our special kids! ↑ |

TUES SEPT 26,2006 Hi Mondo and Jonathan, You are right about the love of water.... we can't get Cliff out of even the tub (he:ll stay in even when the water gets cool for over 1 hour) What does Jonathan do on a typical day? Cliff spends the majority of his free time, playing games, drawing, computor programs, he's just really getting into music these past 6months and last weekend he came out and was playing a cassett ( IT WAS HIM narrating a short story about the titanic) We were blown away to hear him speaking and he even put music selections, in between each chapter, showing his creative side. I snuck into his room and made a copy of it. This past may the school put a little show with songs from the 60's (which my husband and I use to dance to) and again we were blown away to watch him sing real loud and dance.... I never claped so hard in my whole life............and we've been to many concerts with big stars.........this still was the best one we ever saw. They also had non-verble students who danced, did they ever do anything like that in Jonathan's class? Nice talking with you GRATEFULLY KAREN ↑ |

Ki Karen and Cliff, It sounds like a breakthrough that Cliff did what he did(?)! Funny you mentioned Titanic, Jonathan loves that movie, on and off since he first saw it he has come back to it as well as to other like the epic Ben Hur movie, he becomes very focused on certain segments of the movie and wants to repeat (rewind) the scene every time -luckily he cannot or will not do that with a DVD- he takes care of all of his movie technicalities ( turning the DVD/VCR/TV on, play rewind eetc)- when he is not in school this is part of what he does during the day/eve but he also loves the outdoors so he hangs out with our two dogs, cleans his fountain out and makes sure it has plenty of water, will water plants. I also have him do chores around the house (feeds the dogs, fills their water container, makes his bed, does his laundry, empties the trash, collects the mail, even helps retrieving my 1 yr old when he scampers away from me!-- he will do these things with promting from me and occasionally on his own. He is quite self sufficient in most areas but needs prompting to do and remain on task. His daily toilette he can also accomplish but i still shave him since he misses most of it...:) He attends 3hrs/school 5 days/week. enjoys eating out with us but of course all these things dont always go smoothly, much of the time if not all we foreshadow the events of the day (verbally and with signing) to let it sink in because some of it he doesnt like (school, some chores) but on a good day things get done without a 'meltdown' is what we call them: outburst of sorts which calls for loud noise, stomping and just no cooperation...but then he is always apologetci. Does Cliff have these episodes? ↑ |

FRI OCT 6,2006 9:30 pm Hi Mondo and family, I was so impressed at how much you get Jonathan to do- care for two dogs-do laundry- water plants-empty trash, etc. How did you ever accomplish that? Even with prompting , we've tried to get Cliff to do things but to no avail most times. We've tried since he was young. I did hear something one time about singing- and it helping them to remember. What did you learn about singing? I do know if I speak in a certain voice- Cliff really responds by saying, 'Say again!' He loves the tone. As for the episodes...........yep !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We'v e narrowed the causes down to adverse re-actions from red dye#40, blue dye #1&2, chemical odors, certain food preserv., and latetly.................S TRESS................! H e has..... MELT DOWNS .....and since it is so, not his nature to act that way, he is truely apologetic like Jonathan. As I've said in point #12, we now believe he is seizuring down his right side every 3-4 min, but when he has a meltdown, we believe ( the dyes, preserv., chemical odors and stress, trigger a larger seizure......... causing the meltdown.) Only CLEAR LIQ. BENEDRYL can help us then.( We give him 4tea. and stand back and wait 20-30 min) What happens to Jonathan when he has a meltdown? What do you believe triggers it ? How long before the episode passes? Talk to you soon GRATEFULLY KAREN ↑ |

Hi Karen, I was wondering what exatly it is you see when your son is seizing? Is it a visible movement he makes? i am noticing with my son that after drinking a Gatorade drink (which has Dye 40-blue and Red 1)- he becomes angry or more anxious.. i do not see any seizure activity per se. As faar as getting him to do chores, he listens well i am thankful to say; we have used ASL with him for some time but its not that which makes it work, he understands verbal language, the signing reinforces in certain situations or if we are communicating from afar. as i said though, he is not always a willing participant in housework/chores nevertheless he completes them; if i find that he is in an anxious mood, i foreshadow something he can look forward to, something he likes to do, or likes to eat/drink- it helps him keep in perspective what the day will bring and allows himself to 'stretch' his good will and happy mood rather than slump into anxiety and anger because i asked him to do somthing he perhaps sees no value in doing (although i know he understands how a good deed is a positive thing)- does your son shower/bathe on his own? do you have sitter for him when you and husband need to go out? i am in the process of looking for a sitter for him--we always relied on family-which i have a lot of- but we moved about a year ago to another state and not close too family- In regard to meltdowns and episodes- he can have an 'episode' if i lose my patience with him or make the mistake of abruptly saying "no" to something he is doing ( its like i am condemning what he is doing so we rephrase what we want him to do to avoid it but hey! we are human and sometimes it slips!) --if he does get upset though, he can go anywhere from poking at me to spitting, pounding on walls/doors) it can last for a few minutes or an hour,-- redirecting is helpful and he tries to composes himself but its as though the cause of his upset replays in his mind several times during the "meltdown" cuasing little outburst to continue until they altogehter are gone, usually he goes to his room when he is begining to relax, but he gets very warm and sweaty during the whole thing. After i know he is better and in control of his behavior, i ask him to go shower to help cool him off- he does without af problem. I don't seek a cure or answers to the reasons, only ways to help him help himself; its what we do for ourelves after all. Susan ↑ |

Hi could you please explain to me a bit more about the seizures? I have a two year old autistic son and don't know if he has them, are they noticiable? but I don't know exactly what I am looking for.please help thanks ↑ |

THURS. OCT 19,2006 7:30 am Good Day Susan / and gemmdenn, We have trouble finding anyone to come and sit with Cliff. We have a 41yr. old daughter who comes (for pay only) but even that is getting too hard) so it feels like the past 21yrs, we've been under house arrest! It is very painful. Susan. it must be hard on you all without loved ones nearby! Cliff has a very short fuse and takes everything personally and is obsessive complusive, Everything can prove to be a stressor and with stress comes a meltdown, which triggers episodes/seizures. As to seizures............. please see, Autistic Adult at this same site. I talk about seizures on these dates 7-24-06 8-13-06 9-0 3-06 9-10-06 9-15-06 As to what some seizures/ tremors can look like: it can be an .........ever so slight... involuntary muscle twitching or movement. I didn't see it..............until I decided to study /focus on my son's arms and legs. There it was! It blew me away.... A child I loved with my whole heart, under my care (20yrs) had a condition that wasn't even on my radar screen! No one in 20yrs, not a doctor, teacher, case worker, parent.............no one ever said the word....SEIZURE.. to us. We were blind sided! I wish someone, anyone had told us, so we could have watched for seizures, especially around puberty. We've lived in the dark for 7yrs. That's why I decided to ask everyone I meet... Do you know about SEIZURES? If not, type in autism/seizures on the web and you'll be as stunned as we were. Have to run Talk to you all again GRATEFULLY KAREN ↑ |
