My dd is 22 mos old and she hardly ever smiles, she never chews her food she only swallowsit,so i have to chop everything up for her very fine,She never has said one word, she just hollars and makes noises and babbles, she never actually plays with toys she only carries toys around. She likes to lick everything she picks up,she likes to play with her hands, she was in the habit of banging her head on the wall, floor, bed, appliances but she no longer does that, she makes good eye contact, she likes to sit and rock back and fourth, she will not feed herself at all not even finger foods,if she is mad she will have screaming fits, she will only come to me if i hold out my hands to her,she will look at you if you call her name.I thought it was all a phase she was going through and she would start doing more, but so far no changes.Im thinking about having her evaluated for autism.Does these things sound like autism to you?I getting worried about her.She wont even play with other kids. And when i put her to bed at night, she wants to sit up and sleep instead of laying down.Have you guys heard of a child doing all this before?

Ok well I am Autistic and I function fine since I got the help I needed when I was a child. Alot of what you say she is doing I did. Such as not chewing her food, not talking, only having a few select toys, banging my head on walls, rocking back and fourth, screaming fits, and not playing with other children. I would reccomend getting her checked like I said if they find nothing at least you can rule that out. If you can get her the help starting now she should be a "normal" functioning child a little down the road. I was 4-5 when I started to talk and now I dont shut up lol.

rhonda there are many many forms of autism. Some children never speak of show love and then some will end up becoming more normal. The cause is not really known and there is much controversey over what is the best treatment options. I think that the best thing to do is to have the dr test her and go form there. Good luck with everything.

hust keep an open mind. If she does have autism she may not have the ability to act the way that other children do. Her mile stones and the way that she shows affection could be very very different. I have a cousin who is autistic. He is very very smart I think that he could beat anyone in the world in chess LOL, but he has a very hard time being in large groups or in loud places. It took until he was in 2cn grade for him to get diagnosed. He would freak out at school and behave badly so they sent him to a special school for kids with behavior problems and gave him ADHD meds. This didn't work for him at all. IT was a horrable school and the staff was over worked and under paid and it showed. Finally my aunt took him to a new dr and he and a phychrist(spelling) did test and discovered that he was infact autistic. He now go to therpy and to a school for autistic children and he is doing very well. He still has some issues with people touching him or being in a large crowd, but he is excelling in school. Infact he is in 5th grade and is doing high school math. So in short each story is different and every situation unique. You daughter will let you know what works for her. By the way the testing process can be long and extensive, but well worth it.

I hope she is not autistic and that she will start doing more things.I have rarely ever heard her laugh, sometimes you can tickle her and she give a small laugh, but that is only occasionally.

Hi! Well, first of all you need to take a list of her "questionable" behaviors to your pediatrician and tell him you want a referral to a developmental pediatrician, who can do a formal evaluation. And don't feel like you're jumping the gun or overreacting, because its better than underreacting!! Also, ask them to give you a phone number for your states early intervention program. They will evaluate your daughter for free, and usually do it pretty quickly. You do need to do both though, b/c if she does have "issues" you'll need to get help from the medical side (doctors) and educational (Early Int./schoolsystem).
Also, developmental ped. usually have long waiting lists and may not be very close to your house, so its good to go ahead and make the call now, you can always cancel if you need to.
Go to www.firstsigns.org, it is a wonderful site with very very helpful information. Usually, if you feel like something is off about your child, you are probably right (whether autism or whatever). Best of luck, and feel free to email me with any questions!

Sarah M. My children are autistic but they are still young. My husband and my in laws are from Mexico and in Mexico where they are from there is of course not help for learning disabled children. Some of the children born there did not talk until 4 or 5 years of age. My in laws tell me not to worry, they will start talking then as well. They are so calm and collected about these autism symptoms and they seem to have the experience with learning delayed children. Do most autistic children start to function well at 4 or 5 years old? Is it possible for an autistic child to go from very much into their own world to very much into our world? I am sorry to ask you so many personnal questions. If you would not mind me asking you questions I would really love to hear from you at [email protected]. I am sure there are so many mothers who want to talk to you about their children but please take just a few minutes of your precious time to email me. I would really appreciate it. Thank you

Cod liver oil really helps.... not only the autistic brain but it also will boost any person's immune system. The healing is gradual. My son, has been healing gradually from ASD with CLO and other supps. There;s more Dr. Megson info on the web. Also check out Dr. Yasko at www.holistichealth.com. We use probiotics and cilantro. Find a good doc or chiro to help you. Love, Jack's Mom
