I have been reading on the forums about gluten and dairy products and wheat being bad for autistic children. Can someone explain to me what this means as i have no idea what to do anymore. My son cannot eat anything with preservatives in it and is also sensitive to dairy (is there an alternative - like for cheese). He loves his bread and peanut butter, is certain bread also bad for them? He is very thin, always has been but i have never been able to get him to pick up more weight. Can anyone give me any advise? I am in south africa so our products are a bit different here.

Hi Drika, I think you are referring to a gluten free casein free diet. I do this with my kids and I believe it to make a big difference. It greatly reduces hyperactivity and increases concentration. My son hand flaps when he has dairy but it goes away when he is on the diet. The gluten seems to effect the kids digestion giving them diarrhoea. It is easier if you are going to attempt this to go dairy free first. Peplace milk with soy milk or rice milk. don't worry about the gluten just yet. Go off the milk gradually , by mixing it with soy or rice milk so he gets used to the taste. The hardest part I found wa that milk is added to so many foods and having to eliminate tose from the diet. If it works you will see a change within a month. I saw a dietician to get advice on how to do this safely. Liz

Hi drika: I have a website posted with lists of food that are acceptable for our children that are on a Gluten Free Casein Free diet. A long list of foods is given with all of the websites attached; so if the food is not available where you live then you might be able to order it. You can go to: www.northerncaliforniaautism.wetpaint.com I hope that helps. Good luck!
