Hello there.
Has anyone tried the gluten and casein free diet with autistic kids and was it effective in anyway.

Thanks

we tried it and it was not effective for us, however i have read that is effective for some and not others. so it wouldn't hurt to give it a try, maybe it will be successful for you guys. just make sure you do a lot of research, it's a very involved and complicated (along with expensive)diet! good luck.

We started the diet 3 months ago. My son is 5 years old and has been mostly communicating with single words. Since we have started the diet I have not seen any drastic changes but I can tell you that he is starting to use more sentences. I can tell that he is really trying hard to find more words to say. I have heard that it takes time, as long as 6 months. If you think about it; learning 4 or 5 years worth of stuff is not going to happen overnight. It was a little rough at first for me but he hasn't really noticed any difference in his diet. All he knows is that he gets food when he is hungry. As for my husband and daughter they miss bread and cheese but they have also handled it very well. I just couldn't not do it. I don't want to live with the regret of not trying it 5 years down the road. Definitely do some research before you start.

Hi, I have two kids with autism and the diet has really helped. The casein in the dairy products really makes my kids very hyperactive to the point where they just can't concentrate. They also will do a kind of stimming- hand flapping if they eat dairy. The gluten gives my kids diarrhoea, quite severe in the case of my daughter. I found it easier to go casein free first. As it is a huge change in diet for your child. Start by doing half cows milk and half soy milk till they get used to the taste. Also different brands of soy milk taste different and some contain gluten If you do want to try the diet definitely see a dietician as it is not easy. It took us a long time to go completely casein gluten free. Be warned that at first yourchild may actually become more irritable for a week if you remove all the casein and gluten suddenly from the diet-like a withdrawl symptom
