I have a 5 yr old son with autism. A doctor put him on abilify to help with his aggression and meltdowns. It help until he started to throw up alot. He said he will get over it but i did not like that answer so i took him off and it was awful. i saw another doctor which put him on risperdal. It worked well until he started to get sick again. I was wondering if any one else is having this problem or any suggestions.

I am not, by any means, trying to tell you what to do as a parent...there are a lot of hard decisions to make. However, my son is 4 yrs. old and we have done only natural things to try and help him such as: GFCF diet, bio-treatment (with supplements), ABA therapy and lots of consistency at home. My son was not talking at all, was not potty trained, was stimming constantly, had lots of texture issues and ritualistic behaivors not to mention it was horrible when we had to take him places because the tantrums were so bad. I would recommend reading some books written by mothers of autistic children. A really good one is called Unraveling the Mysteries of Autism and PDD (I believe it is by Karen Serousy; although i'm sure i just comletely butchered her last name) That was the first book I read when my son was diagnosed. It not only helps you be able to relate to someone but you can get an honest view of what another parent did and how it worked, or didn't work. I have talked to a lot of parents who have tried lots of different drugs from their doctors and had horrible experiences or had semi-good results with bad side effects. just FYI ...my son now talks up a storm, is completely potty trained, is in preschool with normal children, never throws fits (he's better than my typical 2yr. old), does not stim anymore, and has no more ritualistic behaivors. This, I believe, is the result of my son and I working together for 2 and half years now with the above mentioned things we have done for him. He works hard and I work with him. Good luck to you

Thank You for your advice. It is hard to make these decisions. Where we live there is not whole lot of resources around here. His doctors say not to put him on the diet where i hear it does work. This summer he regressive, I believe. He stopped talking, beating up his sister when he was mad, and choking me. Which he never acted like that and scared me. So that is why his doctors put him on his medicine. Nobody ever mention aba therapy so to be honest with you i don,t know what that is. We do pecs and has him on a scheldule which helps. His doctors also said they think he adhd. The medicine works well, he puts 2 words together, halfway potty trained, on pecs and scheldule, and understand a whole lot more. Preschool has done great with him also. We all work hard. Which his teacher has a autistic son and said the diet worked well but also had to be put on resperdal for temper.. The doctor said my son has acid reflux and that is what is causing the throwing up which he had when he was a young baby. Thank you for your response and i would like to know more about aba. Thanks!

Hi Stephie, my Doctor was really sceptical of the diet but I figured we had nothing to lose and it wouldnt hurt. i went to a Dietician to get advice on the kinds of food. it really makes a big difference with my kids but you have to stick with the diet strictly. So the Doc was really surprised at the difference! And I have two kids with ASD. Good luck. Liz
