Hello. I was wondering if anyone could help me with this one please. I have been in contact with an amazing doctoctor called Dr Gupta from California. He is a Neurologist (I think thats how you spell it). He has said that he can treat my son's autism and cure him even using the IVIG method. Has nayone heard of this before? and do you think it is a good idea? I will be traveling from the UK to get my son treated so I just wanted your oppinion before I get on that plane.

Dear Virginia you want to be really carefull about this one. That is a very big claim this Doctor is making. I go to a lot of autism forums and I have never heard of Ivig curing anyones child of autism. In fact my understanding that its use in treating autism is very contreversial and is not recognised for this use by insurance companies in the US , they they will cover it for some other disorders. On the cureautismnow site is a study done by the same Dr Gupta on only 20 children in 1997 which reached the conclusion after a double blind test that the results were inconclusive. I would be asking him if he has done any double blind tests since, are they published in recognized international medical journals eg The Lancet? what numbers were they tested on (20 is insignificant) and what the results were. You are basically considereing giving your child blood product to cure his autism. And while you might be told this is fairly safe there can be quite dangerous life threatening reactions to this even though it can be rare. Please be very careful of miracle cures for your child. The other year a little boy from the UK died after travelling to the US to receive Chelation therapy that may have beenincorrectly administered. If you havethe kind of money fly over stay in a hospital and receive IVIG or are getting a loan for this maybe the money could be used for therapy instead Like ABA or RDI or some other recognised autism therapy. It's just that you dis ask what people thought so I hope you are not offended. I used to be a nurse and please never take it as safe when someone is administering a blood product or medication into your child intraveneously. Be very sure you understand how it works and how it will "cure your child". Good luck with whatever you decide.

if this link doesn't work just do a search for IVIG treatment autism and you will find a match for Dr Gupta's 1997 study for yourself

Hi Dizzy

I am really greatful for your advise. I think that you might be right. I have also just read the same article and am starting to wonder about this. He has also sold me to give him 25 - 30 mg of zinc per day and also vitam C syrup. I'm sorry to keep bothering you but I was wondering with you being a nurse if you think that this is wise. I'm really greatfull for the advice. I'm gonna look at the other therapys you talked about also. xxx

I have a 5 1/2 year old nephew who is autistic and he's had multiple therapies, but I've never heard of IVIG, can you please spell out so I can look it up.

hi yareli. I'm not sure how to spell it but if you out in IVIG treatment for autism on google it brings it all up. I have also spoken to a mother that has had this done for her son who is now eight and is totaly autism free. She said that she will put me intouch with other parents that have had this done and will let you know when I speak to them. If you call Dr Gupta in California Irvine (you will be able to get the number from google) he will also tell you more about it. I hope this helps.

My understanding is zinc is given to help children who like to bite or chew on things a lot. Do you know if your son has a zinc deficiency? Talk to your local doctor about blood tests. Supplements are really of only any value if there is a deficiency. Good luck.
