I have a son turning 3 in November. No speech, and little cooperation in therapy sessions. We have been trained in aba principles, and have started doing sessions. Right now we are working on eye contact and following directions and pointing. Would the diet be helpful? Is there tests that can figure this out before spending time and money on it. Or would funds be better spent on having a trained aba therapist come in. He receives ST, OT, DT,PT and only two hours with a BCBA from the state early intervention program.

With my experience, it is very useful. I didn't believe it before. Also it is very hard for me to do it. When my son is two years and four months, he didn't speak anything. He only drinked five bottle milk each day, eat only noodle, eggs, fried chips, pizza, seafood. It is impossible to do it. I scare my son hungry to dead. I ask my doctor, Could I just do it partly, not fully. The answer is "No". We tried very hard, gluten and diary free for him. He is not eating a lot from the beginning. Then he eat. The happiness for me is he speak his first word "help" to me. That why I continue to try the diet for it. After several months, he can eat everything. I am very happy to it. It costs our a lot of money but maybe worth it.
I have a lot of friends who does gluten free and casein free for them, some of them get good result and some don't. I suggest you to try at least three months, if it helps, continue to do it.
My son now does very well. He talks to everyone. Only problem is he still repeat the same topic sometimes. We need to remind him once is enough and three times you lose your friends.

In my limited experience, I would start many different methods to see what works. My friends have the best luck with dietary supplements and early therapy. I haven't heard much about diets, but anything could be useful. You just have to try.
