Action, if known: Atypical neuroleptic-this drug is believed to increase the availability of serotonin and dopamine at specific receptors in the brain.
Side effects: Drowsiness, dizziness, sedation, agitation, nausea, changes in appetite, weight gain or loss, or sexual dysfunction may occur. Seroquel lowers the seizure threshold. It also carries a danger of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), extrapyramidal side effects, and tardive dyskinesia
Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate) is an atypical antipsychotic medication approved by the FDA in 1997 to control the symptoms of schizophrenia and the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder. Seroquel is also prescribed for conditions like dementia, psychotic depression, autism, and some developmental disorders, which are NOT approved uses of the drug.

These are some things I found on Seroquel. It is a serious drug and I would think that if it were my son I would do a LOT of research on it before I would give it to him. However, I have not met you or your child so I cannot say what is best. Just give you this little bit of info. Good luck to you!

Hi Shan,
It sounds pretty heavy for a 4 yr old; I am not a doctor but i am a nurse, Seraquel in my experience was always used after lighter medications didn't work to treat a difficult/aggressive behavioral issue. A four year old hasn't even reached a 'settled' stage (specially if he is Autistic)- is an atypical psychotopic and like most psychotropics, the side effects are many and sometimes dangerous- one specific one i would worry about in giving this to a child (even a young adult) is tardive dyskenisia eventhough it is less reported with atypical psychotropics it can still occur (uncontrolled muscle movements) which once this side effect takes place, it remains. Of course, your pediatrician/MD and you know your child best but it seems pretty heavy for a 4 yr old- there are surely other things to try before Seroquel? ABA? non-medication treatments? I don't know your 4 yr old and he may have heavy behavior problems but it seems that often, drugs that have not yet been on the market for 15-20 years are so easily prescribed. Some of these side effects take that long to become known! !0 years on the market it not long at all to know its full benefits or negative long term effects! I too would be very hesitant to give. My son was prescribed Risperidol several yrs ago (he was already 12-13 yrs old and even then i was very hesitant to give becasue it was so new and eventhough the doctor stated it had no Tardive Dyskenisia and harsh side effects, it took but a few more years to add TD to its list of side effects... the dosage is low and he has not developed TD, my hopes are to get him off of this medication soon. I wish you luck, check out the use of this drug among age populations, diagnosis for use, children etc, it pays to do research.

I failed to mention that in my experience it (Seroquel) was used only in the elderly population.
I really donot know its use among the younger crowd but would be hesitant myself.
