I have started to believe that my daughter has something more then autism because of her scoliosis, her pale skin and sensitivity to heat and sun, she can barely walk at two and a half, she just developed an exotropic strubismus almost overnight, she has a swallowing disorder, and she is always laughing to herself for no apparent reason. She never makes eye contact and cannot even imitate clap hands. She seems to be more mentally handicapped then an autistic child and I was wondering if anyone knew about this disease which is what I am starting to believe that my daughter has.

Hi Ive noticed this post has been up for a little while with no replies. I have heard a little bit about angelman's syndrome but my kids have autism so I can't help a lot. I believe you can have scoliosis ,the laughing and the strabismus you mentioned with this syndrome. Normally the comprehension of language is better than the speech. You really should discuss your concerns with your paediatrician and ask for blood tests. Another test often done is for Fragile x it can also be mistaken for autism too. You can have a mental handicap AND autism together. My son was hopeless at imitation at that age, my daughter regressed at 2 1/2. Good luck to you and your daughter and I hope you get the help she needs.

Thank you for your response. I read your comments on other topics all the time. I have been looking to talk to a mother of an angel and have not been very successful with the chat rooms on angelmans. I hope you do not think what I am saying is rude but sometimes, at least with my children, I do not see the difference between autism and mental handicap. I hear all the time that autism is not a form of mental retardation, it is a developmental disability and I just wonder what the difference between mental retardation and developmentally disabled is. A child with down syndrome is labeled mentally retarded but they can speak and comprehend much more then my autistic children so how can my children not be mentally retarded. And please note, I am using these words by their definition and am in no way being disrespectful.

No I don't think you are be rude at all. It is very difficult to measure IQ in someone who has language problems. sometimes people with autism are mis diagnosed as having mental retardation as well and some can have both. I will try and find alink for you. Liz

Meredyth Goldberg Edelson has done an exensive study in measuring intellegence in non verbal autistic children. She believes that mental retadation in autism is not as common as once assumed and that the IQ of a lot of these children in the past has been inaccurately measured] see www.williamette.edu/scene/2006/spring/28/ Hope you find some parents to chat to soon.
