Please.....your child happens to have autism...they are not an autistic child. Please be politically correct and refer to them as "child with autism"

Hi there LettyVLO it's hard when you have burnout. Been there already and it was a terrible time. You must try to get time to yourself as this is important. Can you get any respite? Any family to help? It is important that now you listen to your body. I did get quite bad and just cried a lot and then I after the crying stage I felt so emotionally empty, nothing! Which was a frightening experience, to feel so exhausted that I felt nothing. I did what I had to to fulfill his needs and no more to be honest. But with rest and giving myself some time I slowly started to feel a bit more human. Hope that this helps in some way, it's not easy but you will get there.

Hi, I'm brand new to this - chat room as well as dealing with autism. We've recently put our 8 yr old daughter on the gluten free/casien free diet. (have seen an improvement! yeah!) Now her Dr. wants me to take her off sugar. I tried Agave and she seemed to regress. Does anyone know anything about Agave that I should know about? Has anyone else seen a reaction to it?

Hi. I'm not a sahm, but I only work part time. I am mom to a 4 1/2 year old son who is autistic and a 1 1/2 year old daughter who is not. He was diagnosed in Feb 2007 and is not improving with therapy as we had hoped.

I really need to vent to some other parents of autistic children about my son. I feel like a failure even though I have done everything that I can think of to help him (different types of behaviour intervention, GFCF diet, allergy testing, B-12 nasal spray, OT therapies). It seems like we take one step forward and them two steps back with every new idea.

I'm running out of ideas on how to help my son and do not think that it is healthy that my daughter and husband are now the only reasons that I get up in the morning. Is this what caretaker burnout feels like?

Hello, I have a 14-year old son who is AD/HD and a 4-year old daughter who is autistic. They are sweet, wonderful, huggable, lovable, joyful, bratty, terrors, that make me, smile, laugh, jump for joy, swell with pride, pull my hair and scream. I love them both so much that they are perfect for me no matter how much they drive everyone else crazy!

my son just turned 4 and is still non-verbal. i have had him in a ppcd program last yr and the yr before that in eci project tykes. i wonder when he will ever talk. it really concerns me. what will he be like? will he ever seem close to normal? someone suggested i get him an MRI done to ck for abnormalities, and said there are a lot of good meds out there for kids w/epilepsy etc which is related sometimes to autism. my child doesn't have seizures but i wonder if the mri would tell me anything. thanks. nancy in houston

I do not know what kind of problems we are talking about, but remember the key here is time and patience, nothing works over night. It takes repetitive consistency. It takes them a long time to get it. It was 5 years before my child learned and understood, but you must role model the behaviors he needs to learn replay it over and over again. I know because I had the Director Dr. Sue Ann Kline (you can look her up on the internet) of the Autism Asperger Resource Center in Kansas city evaluate my son, because the school complained everything they did was not making a difference. he wasn't gettiing it. you know what she told them? Not Yet it hasn't made a difference, you just have to keep teaching and role modeling it, and put him with child who are good role models not in a class with other behavior challenged children because then they learn more bad behaviors and you have more you have to work on. Trust me be patient. Find a therapist who knows and understands autism, psychologist more less would be better, they will evaluate him and then work with those areas, find social skills groups for autism.

Hi, I am currently an undergraduate student at Barry university in Miami and I am conducting a survey for my thesis on "parent's perceptions of the link between autism and vaccinations. I am posting the official letter that was approved by the Institutional Review Board at my University. The online survey is on the Autism Speaks website. I am asking that you please log on and respond if interested to help make new breakthroughs on how parents still feel.

Dear Parent,

I am inviting you to participate in a research study that is examining parental perceptions of the link between vaccination and autism. Along with this letter there is a short survey that asks a variety of questions about the above mentioned topic. I am asking you to look over the survey and, if you choose to do so, complete it on this internet website. It should take you no longer than 10-15 minutes to complete. Results from the first 100 participants will be used.

The results of this project will be used as data for a research thesis. Through your participation I hope to understand the perceptions of the link between vaccination and autism. Should you chose to participate you will complete the surveys online via the internet website SurveyMonkey.

Contents of the survey may be emotionally disturbing. Some of the survey items may be considered personal and may cause a slight level of anxiety. If you experience any uncontrollable feelings of anxiety or emotional discomfort please contact 888-Austism-2 (288-4762).

Benefits of this study include adding to the body of research on the perceptions of the link between vaccination and autism. Your survey submission will be anonymous and will not contain any identifiable information. Because the survey will be completed online from a home computer, there is a possibility that a participants' IP address may be viewed by the PI or PI’s advisor. Participants’ IP addresses will be erased from all data by the PI upon receipt. The PI and the faculty advisor Dr Linda Bacheller will review the data for analyses purposes. Researchers will not retain any identifying information and the anonymous data set will be stored in password protected data file on the PI’s computer. If the IP address appears in the data set received by SurveyMonkey they will be deleted. The anonymous data file will not be destroyed.

Your participation in this study is voluntary and you have the right to refuse to participate, to refuse to answer any particular question, or withdraw from participation. A possible alternative to participation is to not participate. By proceeding with this survey you consent to participate.

If you have any questions or concerns about completing the surveys or about being in this study, you may contact me at [email protected] or the faculty advisor, Dr. Linda Bacheller via telephone at 305-899-4576 or via email at [email protected]. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Barry University has approved this study.

The link is posted on Autism Speaks using Survey monkey software.

Hi, I’m a mother of two autistic children. I have a daughter aged 7 and a son aged 2 and a half. My daughter was diagnosed when she was 2 and my son just got the diagnosis last month. My husband works long hours and I find myself feeling isolated and alone and longing to forge relationships with others in the same situation as me to talk about the highs and the lows. If anyone would like to chat you can email me at [email protected]
also I found this address that appears to be an autism chat room-

I've
been to it a couple of times since i found it a few days ago but there hasn't been anyone in there when I've gone. Hope to see some of you in there from time to time :)

I am a parent of an autistic child, unfortunatly I am in Ohio--but we are thinking of starting a support group here in the city I m living in, we can also add you as an online member if you would like. I really don't feel there is enough advocacy of parents with autistic children, and with the number being 1 in 150 children its not fair!!!!!! So go ahead and email me and we will get this group started ASAP!!!! my email address is mbmoney@sbcglobal,net. This is also for any other parent that is struggling with the autism diagnosis!

Please all that want an autism chat room, email me--with the hours that you an be available and the days. It is not fair that us mothers of an autistic child should suffer, I only want to talk about the difficulties that we face--please do not respond if you have nothing to contribute! My email address is [email protected]

May God bless everyone!!

I have posted an article on controlling temper tantrums (anger outbursts). You can read it at http://www.associatedcontent.com/

g_anger_outbursts.html?cat=25

It
gives tips and suggestions to parents (like myself) who have children on the spectrum. Read it and tell me what you think.
