Hello ~ have been writing in the ADHD group, but had a meeting at school this morning and have had a dx. of Asperger's in my 10 yr. old. He is on 72 mg. of Concerta for his ADHD, but we (home & school) knew there was something more to it than that. I told our Ped. that I thought there could be something else and he was quick to answer no... just ADHD. What a relief (in a way) that there is something so we know how to work with him. I guess I'm just looking for others who have been dealing with this as well and how you do it. And how things are working for your children.

Wow that sounds familiar! The schools are not qualified to diagnose Aspergers! We discovered at 10 years also after years of struggle and blame! We went to a neuroligist and after 5 minutes of talking to my son he asked me if I ever heard of Asperger's syndrome! I said yes but the school SAID HE DID NOT FIT THE 10 QUESTION LIST! SO HE COULD NOT HAVE AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER!

Wow that sounds familiar! The schools are not qualified to diagnose Aspergers! We discovered at 10 years also after years of struggle and blame! We tried Ritalin & it made him a zombie and he lost weight and looked awful and they were happy with that! We took him off & he was much better but not for them. We did all of the classwork at home at night until 2nd grade we just started home school. I did it for 2 years & went looking for help back in public school & got nothing for 2 1/2 years. We went to a neuroligist and after 5 minutes of talking to my son he asked me if I ever heard of Asperger's syndrome! I said yes but the school said, HE DID NOT FIT THE 10 QUESTION LIST! SO HE COULD NOT HAVE AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER! When we brought in the detailed report and results from an exam by a neuro-psycologist the head of psycological services that was present at the IEP was not even qualified to read the results!
Of course the diagnosis changed nothing for him at school. He actually lost ground in public school so I took him back out.
They are not equipped to teach these kids in most cases.
