I live in Australia and for us school has just begun again. My problem is I have a 5yr old who I have to take to pre-primary everyday, and I am not sure what I can do to keep my son who is 2/12 and autistic to keep him entertained/contained while I deal with my daughter for 15 mins. So far he runs out of the classroom and to the previous class she was in so I have to chase him and try getting him out of there (usually tantruming occurs) then if he is in the right classroom he plays with the computer or tries to steal the fruit! I bring his own fruit but that still does not stop him.I am looking for any good ideas. He is not interested in puzzles or stories which is all we can do when we take kids into class.Does anyone else have this problem? How do you deal with it?

Hi gemmdenn ~ I have a 26 mo. old son who has not been dx. w/ autism although I still think that is what it is, he has been dx. w/ SI sensory intergration and something else (forget what they called it) and his speeched is delayed. But your son sounds like mine, he will go everywhere and get into everything. We are still using a stroller! He can't run! He actually seems to like it, his own special place w/ his blanket and stuffed cat and of course his thumb. He has no interest in toys or books either. We recently went to see Sesame Street Live w/ another mom who has a son the same age ~ no stroller ~ he stayed w/ us and played w/ the older boys, Mine was in his stroller. He finally wanted to get out and I talked to him ~ took him out ~ FREE and running EVERYWHERE! I let him run around for a little but back to the stroller we went. Hope this is helpful to you. Praying for you and your family ~ parksmomof4 [email protected] (If you'd like to talk more)

Hi parksmom when my daughter was in kindy I used to put my son in a stroller and it was a lot easier but know he just refuses to get in one.He will kick and scream and arch his back so I can't buckle him up and if I manage to get him in there he will just scream and thrash about .At moment I am having trouble just getting him out of the car!!

Hi There,
When my son was that age I had the same problem going places and in the car (he would undo his baby seatbelt while I was driving) I invested in a hand held dvd player and good earphones, and every time I needed a few minutes (at school, shopping, trying to eat I would turn on his favorate dvd and he would watch and listen intently. I also found that if he became upset in a strange place he would ask for the dvd movie and earphones so he could ground himself.
I don't know if this will help you but it sure helped me.
good luck
