yes. i have run into several problems with the public school system where i live. does your child have a case worker? if not , you need one. they can help you and your child get the things you need. also, try to get into a support group if you don't have one already. they can give you alot of names and resources to help. i felt so alone until i talked with the right people who put me in the right direction. feel free to write back if you need more specifics , especially with school.

Hi Lisa, Thank's for responding. What School system are you dealing with? I do have an ED Advocate and several others for my son. However,I can not seem to get the right plan for him.The system I deal with seems to go out of there way to make things difficult.

we live in chesterfield , virginia. she is in the public school system here. trust me , it has not been an easy road. they can be helpful in some areas and make it difficult in others. the best way of getting help for us has been through outside people. i got in touch with support groups and those people have really helped me with the right connections. i also got in touch with my local county for a case worker. you will have to go through an intake doctor first . then they will assign your case worker who can direct you with proper programs for your son. just call your local department of mental health services. ask lots of questions!!! another thing i did was get with a autistic/developemental specialist who can usually provide help and programs from within. mine is Childrens Hospital. good luck. write back if you need anything or just want to talk.

hey Lauri, hope your holiday was good and everything is going okay for you guys. we are doing well, one day at a time. i wanted to tell you i went to a meeting last week about IEP's . they are trying to change some rules on us here in Virginia. i also was told that about 10 states, i wasn't told which ones other than Va. that are going to drop "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" because it cost too much money. how sad is it that we live in a country that pushes education and SOL's so hard on our children and then OUR KIDS with difficulties get dumped off. special education gets treated like it's just something they have to take care of until they can get the kids out , diploma or not. then they don't have to be responsible anymore. i was so angry when i heard about that . it is ridiculous . even sadder , it's about money . be careful about your IEP's . they are trying to make it a law in Virginia that they are good for 3 yrs, that parents don't even have to sign them anymore, that they have the right to just move your child from class to class. even worse, now they are talking about behavior problems with special needs kids and how the school system may be able to not take that into consideration when dealing with our children. it terrifies me to even think about it. they are trying to take away whatever rights parents have which unfortunately, that's all we have left. just wanted to give you a heads-up . hopefully your state is not trying to make all these changes like mine. let me know how things are going for you . lisa
