When my kids were around six years old, I began to give them an option for their birthday. They could have a big party or a fun day. For the fun day, we took them out to eat, then to toys-r-us where they could spend hours picking out gifts, or one big gift, I used the party money for toys. Then off to see a movie. They went back and forth over the years, but they loved the fun days. That evening, we would have cake and ice-cream. ↓
