did anyone else experience this? My doc said it was the worst she has ever seen in her 20 years of delivering babies. My baby is 7 mo old and i am still having problems. I moved away from my doc and have to find a new one. (never fun)... i am so uncomfortable in my skin now like never before. I hope i can find someone to share stories with so i dont feel so alone about it.

I only had a second degree tear but I feel your pain. My sisters labia tore, was sewn poorly and healed as two seperate flaps (so now she has like 3 minor labia) . Her MD told her when she was done having kids they could do reconstructive surgery on it. I don't think it is uncommon but we women just don't like to discuss it. Did you only tear or did you have an episioitomy(sp)?

Mel, I know what you mean. I went through the same thing. Did you have a big baby? Mine was 10 lbs. 3 oz. and they didn't think he was going to be that big till his head was crowning. It's tough, I had an episiotomy and tore completely through to my rectum. It took as long to sew me up as it did to puch my baby out. It does get better, but you should look for a Dr. Mine told me that it's hard to tell how you will feel until after the first year, it takes awhile to tell. There wasn't much they could do to help me with my pain and I had to go in and have scar tissue removed. I will still need to be stitched up tighter, but my Dr. wants to wait till I'm done having kids so I won't have to go through anymore tearing. My Dr. ended up sending me to a physical therapist last year about this time, my son will be 3 in August. It's still not the same, but it is getting better. Are you still having pain and did you lose any feeling? I have had some nerve damage and it sucks, I couldn't even feel enough to tell if I was able to do a kegel, but have kept up with it. There's actaully more people around here than you think that have had problems with tearing, it's nice to hear you aren't alone.

Hi, i had a 4th degree vaginal tear, my was very big at 12 lbs, but after 4 hours i finally pushed it out. I didn't realise then but i had done severve damage to my vagina. The doctors then attempted to sew me up but it didn't work. So after months in pain having to keep going to the hospital to get sew up again. After a year i decided that as i could never use my vagina again because of the pain, i decided to get a sex change, my husband agreed and the operation went ahead. Doctors constructed a penis out of my vaginal flaps. After a month in hospital i was alound to go home. I now live happily with husband and son in France, i can safely say that life as a man is alot better.

Wow Mel, you must be tiny, or I must be freakishly big. Anyway, I hope it gets better and be sure to tell your Dr. everything that is bothering you, don't be embarrassed. They are there to help you.

Hi. I also had a 4th degree tear. When I went back for my 6 week check up, the nurse said it would have been better for me to have had a C section. My gynecologist said that he may be able to do an operation to correct where the tissue had torn away from the muscle...I have problems holding it when I need to go to the bathroom (bowel movement). Do you experience anything like this? I also feel like I'm the only one with these problems...it's embarassing!

Stacy, don't be embarraseed. I haven't had problems with bowels holding them in but had lots of problems with incontinence and do have issues having a bowel movement, it takes awhile and is still painful. My Dr. also told me I should have had a C-section too. I was sent to a physical thereapist to strenghten my muscles and it did help a lot. I still don't have all of the feeling back, but it's so much better. Talk to your Dr. about your problems and see if they can do anything to help. I had to wait a good year and work on my muscles before I started trying for baby #2, my Dr. was afraid I wouldn't be able to hold a baby with the problems I was having. I worked hard but now am expecting #2 in Dec. I'm nervous for this time around, but at least I know that all of the problems I was experiencing and the pain was not normal.

Chris R,
Thanks for the nice words and encouragement! Also, congratulations on baby #2!! My last was my second, and after all the DRAMA, I decided that was enough for me and had a tubal! :) Did the doctor suggest you have a C section this time since you had such a rough time last time? I'll be praying for you!

Thanks Stacy! My Dr. thinks I'll be fine to have another vaginal delivery and won't tear as much since I didn't get sewn up enough. I'm pretty nervous for the recovery, but otherwise okay. I have been keeping up with my exercises so I can keep my muscle tone and hold this baby just fine. I will be getting more repair work done after this one though, so I will have to get more stitches, but I'm hoping it won't hurt as much this time. Mostly the tearing hurt last time, not the cut, wso fingers crossed on that! My Dr. told me after the first one that they would be monitoring the next baby(s) to see the size. They told me that they will be inducing early to save me some of the problems of having a big baby. We'll see, I don't get to go in till June 14th at 12 weeks, but they were really excited when I called to schedule. Thanks for you kind thoughts and prayers. I appreciate it so much, it is nice to know you aren't the only one going through this.

ok so i split horizontally both ways, and i didn't have an epoisiotnomy...w.\hen my doc was done repairing it she said if i wanted it perfect i'd have to have plastic surgery. i didn't do that. i now have a hole the size of a pea on one side, and i worry about it tearing during intercourse. so no, you arne't the only one.

I got a very deep 3rd degree tear, but I just had my son last month, so I still have a while to fully heal. Good luck with finding a new doc!

I am so glad I found this forum. I also had a 4th degree tear. I had my baby almost 5mo ago. I am currently on medical leave because I had sphinctor rectialplasty. I also had the scare tissue removal. Depending on the injury some doctors will make people wait up to a year. In my case, I'm glad I didn't have to wait (ultrasound showed I could never heal my muscles back together on my own). I think I would have gone out of my mind if I had to suffer any longer with leakage. It is a major surgury, and I have to be off work for 5-6 wks. The pain is about the same as when I originally tore. Now that I'm on the mend I noticed that the bottom of my vagina protrudes out when I put pressure down there. Sort of like I don't have a support system holding it in. Does anyone have that problem? I plan on asking my doctor, but I wasn't sure if this something common after such an injury or if its something I should be concerned about.
