My little on is 10 month old and won't take formula. I was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer and told by my surgeon that I needed to start on thyroid hormone immediately so that my thyroid will stop spreading the cancer, even though my surgery is not for 2 weeks. I planned on nursing for a year, but that is not possible now. My baby won't accept formula; se wants nothing to do with it. I use it to mix cereal, but that it is only about 6-8 oz. a day. My pediatrician did not have any helpful advice. Any ideas?

First of all I am so sorry to hear about your cancer and that you will have to stop nursing. Will she accept a bottle of BM? If so you can mix about 2 oz of formula with BM for a few days, then increase to 3, 4 etc. until she is accepting straight formula. Do you have some BM alreadly frozen? I know that you are supposed to wait until they are a year to switch to cows milk however IMO I would think it would be difficult to switch to formula for just 6 -8 weeks and then switch to cows milk, if I was in that situation I would try to go ahead with the cows milk, slowly adding it in. I started my daughter with cows milk at 11 months, I don't really believe 4 weeks makes a big difference. After all back in the old days older babys were given cows milk all the time, if a mother was ill, or unable to nurse and no wet nurse was available, because formula certainly was not a option.

I'm am sorry your ped is not helpful, have you discussed the situation with your surgeon, maybe moving it back a few more weeks?
