Have you tried giving him a pacifier? I know a lot of moms worry about them getting addicted to the pacifier, but it's not good for your nipples to be used as one either! I advise to stop letting him do this ASAP, it's not good for his mouth/teeth (milk pooling in the mouth can cause decay in early teeth) OR for your sanity!!!

I delt with this situation for 13 months. I tried the pacifier but my son really did not like it. He would fall asleep while nursing and then I would take him and put him in his crib. My theory was they are only young once and I enjoyed being close with my son. It was once explained to me that the first 3 months of a childs life is like you are still pregnant but carry the baby in your arms instead of the womb Maybe he needs to be close to you right now. The sucking motion is often calming to babies. I would embrace the experience and your child will benefit from it. As for my son we would consistantly put him in his crib each time he fell asleep and he slowly learned this was the place to be when he was tired. As for using me as a pacifier it slowed down drastically after 3 months and it became a once day thing until he was 13 months and then he decided to stop. Many of my friends went threw this and I can tell you none of our kids have bad teeth, they are very healthy, and it was a beautiful bonding experience for us.

Thank you for your replies, just so you know im not repeating myself but my messages took ages to update themselves and werent showing up!!!!! i have tried to give him a pacifier but he wont take it all the time especially whenhe is crying which is when i need him to take it!! i agree about not having bad teeth my daugter done exactly the same thing but because this is my second child i no longer have the luxury of having all day to spend with my son one on one, which is a pity, unfortunatately he kkeps searching for his thumb so im thinking the situation will sort itself out as i think has going to be a thumbsucker!!!...but until then i need to try and get into a routine with him so that i can get other things done while he is sleeping and then when he wakes im free to sit down with him... why didn't anyone tell me having 2 kids was such hard work!!!!( but i wouldnt change it for the world!!) thing is i love breastfeeding, i love the closeness that it gives you and really cont want this problem to get that bad that i have to give up.
