My son 5 1/2 month old got his first tooth and keeps biting me, I tell him off and he just looks and smiles. I can feel his tooth when his feeding and he has scraped a piece of skin from nipple and gee it hurts.

What have other people done?

i completely understand! my 11 mos has 6 teeth! it does hurt at times but what i did was just scold him and tell him no no, no bite and put him stenly down. not mean just very stren. if yours has never heard you fuss at him he may cry, just explain it to him child like. after a few mins try again. he prolly will do it over and over to see the reaction from you so be persistant. i was afraid mine was gonna bite my nipple off. i had blood blisters from it. but i a weeks time he quit. now when he starts teething, at different points, he will do it again. it must feel good. i bent my finger and lets him bite it. i put it just back enough so that the tooth wasnt touching my finger. oral gel, teethers can help too. just keep trying and he will get the point but reacte the same way everytime and dont smile or immidiatly pick him back up. you have to send an easy to understand message to him. he is learning cause and effect right now. keep your head up high, dont stop feeding him because of teeth. it will stop i assure you

ugh....i am cringing just thinking about it...luckily i don't have to deal with that right now!! but i was told that you should make your actions really noticable...like squeal and say OUCH, and make a face like it hurts.....apparently, they will react to this and eventually know that you don't like what's happening.....i don't know...i'm not an expert, but this is what i heard anyways.....YIKES!!!!

i agree with mama_ash, don't make a huge fuss about it and try not to make any noise or anything. when i would cry out (cause it hurt) my son thought it was the funniest thing he had ever seen so he kept doing it. i would just unlatch my son and tell him no bite, that hurts mommy then put him on the floor. then a few mins. later i would try again. it didn't take long at all for him to realize that if he bit he didn't get any more boobs. he didn't like that much and i have't had problems since. also it is impossible for them to bite while latched on properly. if you pay really close attention you can catch them right when they let go enough to bite. hope some of this helps. also a good thing for teething pain are Hyland teething tablets. they are all natural. i have heard some bad things about orejel, it toughens up babies gums and makes it harder for them to get the tooth through and they can also swallow some of it and it will make their throat numb and can choke.

i have never heard the thing on orajel but i always wondered if that was why they said to only use it ( ) times a day. i thought well it couldnt hurt to numb it but i wonder about their little throats getting numb and choking. i have used the teething tablets with my first abd i didnt think it lasted long enough. but that was 4 years ago so they may be better. i dunno, i also heard but never tried it was to apply the tylenol or motrin directly on the gums when you give it to them. oh yeah and an older neighbor told me to rub so whisky or brandy on the gums. didnt try that. wouldnt really but some have im sure.

my grandpa said that when i was a baby that my grandma would rub rum on my gums. i guess when my mom found out she had a complete meltdown! i ususally give tyenol and the teething tablets at the same time. that is what i like about them, they don't have anything in them that interacts with other medicne.
