I have a 11 week old baby girl and she eats for 5-7 minutes total every 2 hours sometimes longer.. Everything I read says they should be eating 10-15 minutes or more on each side.. She is definately gaining wait.. but it just doesn't seem like she is eating very long.. Is this normal?

Hi Casie, If she is gaining weight then perhaps she is just a quick eater. My son nursed day and night literally. He never seemed to gain much weight. 13 months later I came to determine he had a milk allergy. Often when were allergic to something we crave it in excess. The doctors made me feel bad like I wasn't feeding my son enough because he wasn't gaining weight but here it was his allergy wasn't allowing him to obsorb the nutriets. So nursing longer isn't always better. If the weight keeps going up your doing a good job.
Don't forget babies also go in hunger spurts along with their growth spurts. One week she may be extremely hungry and the next week she may barely want to eat. I know it's nerve racking nursing your child because we don't have a percise measurement like formula that we should feed them. Rest assure breastfeeding has been around since the begining of time.Your baby will eat when she's hungry.

Thank you Tia.. It sure is frustrating.... I wouldn't do it any other way though.. You're right though.. It's rough not having a precise measurement.. Shes definately growing..I guess I'll just have to go on that.. Thank you so much!

You can also talk to a lactation consultant if you are really worried. They usually have a few in the hospitals where you may of had your child. They have a way of making you feel better about breastfeeding when it gets stressful. I even used mine as a counselor when I was having problems with my daughter breastfeeding. She was just a great listener. I agree with Tia though, as long as she is gaining weight then you’re doing just fine! Happy and healthy is what matters!

my son is now 3 months old i had the same concerns most of the time he eats anywhere from 5-7 mins 10 mins max now that he is getting older he sometimes takes both sides. In the begining he weighted 6'11 at birth feeding every 11/2 to 2 hrs in 10 days he went to 8'2 at 1 month he was 10'14 at 2 months he is a heafty 13'4 i had my concerns as well but my dr says he is fine and he is growing so thats all that matters.
