i talked to my doc about this when i was pregnant with my son and she said it is true because your body burns calories to make the milk needed for a child. So I ended up breastfeeding my son and lost all of my weight by the time I went to my 6wk. check up. But I do know women who lost the weight without breastfeeding, I think it just helps out is all.
Hope that helps! Sorry to write so much!

Not sure mommy...both me and my sis-in-law breastfed our little ones. I lost my weight by 9 weeks post-baby and my s-i-l didn't lose hers for 9 months.

it also helps to tone your uterus and helps with the after baby tummy chub.

one of the ways that it helps you to loose the weight is that it takes an extra 500 calories to make the milk a day. so just by sitting there and nursing you are burning an extra 500 calories.

I didn't lose my weight until I started running 3-4 miles 3x a week. And even then I didn't lose all of the weight. But when I stopped breastfeeding, I lost almost ten pounds in two weeks. Read more about breastfeeding and weight on my blog
