Sounds like my first son when I had him! I called the doctor and she said "classic colic" and gave me an antispasmotic med for him that helped a little. I thought that breastfed babies cannot get colic and it was just what I ate, but I was wrong. I was on the most bland diet I could be, but it didn't help. I tried formula but there was no change and I figured I may as well get to breastfeed!! It goes away after about 4 months.

Is he gassy? Try eliminating gassy foods or caffiene from your diet.

My son seemed fine all day but at night he became fussy. It wasn't colic because it was only when we layed him down. Turns out my son was allergic to milk. His belly hurt him when he laid down at night. Doctors are not required to take nutritional classes and most will tell you a milk allergy is unlikely with breastfed babies. Not true.

I had to eliminate all dairy from my diet. All milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. Within 24-48 hours I saw a change. You do not need dairy in your diet for your child to be healthy. The reason dairy is suggested is for calcium for you so make sure you take a supplement.

Chances are it's something you are eating that is irritating his belly at night keeping him up. Keep a food diary and chart your babies behaviors I'll bet you see a pattern. Hope this helps.

Mel,
Wow. That's a tough place to be.

We had the same difficulty with my second. I cannot remember her exact age at the time, but there was two or three months where right on cue she would start to cry incessantly from 6:45 pm to 8:00 pm. It was a very trying time.

We finally found if we walked and jiggled her just so on our forearm like a football, she would settle down a bit. But just when we stopped, she would immediately start right up again until the magic hour of 8 pm. Although my forearm did grow in strength, I never did get strong enough to do it for any great length of time, and we just had to see it through.

I started giving her daily baby massages, and shortly after that the crying seem to stop. Though, to be honest with you I do not know if it was from the massage or just from natural timing, as I understand colic doesn't usually last more then a few short months (though at the time it seems like an eternity).

Hang in there, I hope you find some ease.
