Just wondering if any of you have ever had thrush in your breast? Today I nodiced sharp pains in both breasts, so I did a little research and thrush was something that came up. I didn't feed my new born breast milk after I discovered that that's what it might be. So I pumped and nodiced that my milk had a strange odor, then I smelled some that I had in the refrigerator and it smelled the same, kinda fowl. Just wondering if any one knows if thrush affects the odor of breast milk or has any idea why it might smell different??

Hmmm...I didn't have thrush, but I had mastitis, and it caused my milk to look pink due to the blood. It didn't smell funny though...I would call your lactation consultant at the hospital, or your obstetrician. You could also ask your pediatrician.

Re:
the odor. It could have been something that you ate, onions, garlic, heavy spices, etc.

i had it on my breasts and my daughter had it in her mouth at about 4 weeks. you need to see a doctor to get an antibiotic for the baby...it's very contagious and can cause them pain...i never found it to be painful, but just extremely ITCHY. my pedi. prescribed an oral antibiotic for the baby and advised me to take monostat (vaginal yeast infection cream) and put it on my nipples after each feeding to kill it. it's totally harmless to the baby...but you need to continue to breastfeed like normal or it will lower your supply. definately see a dr. because a change in smells is not something i had to deal w/ so can't be sure that it is thrush. how old is the baby and does he/she have white spots/patches in their mouth?

I checked the baby as soon as I found out that I might have it, he don't have it. I wasn't breast feeding I was pumping and bottle feeding breast milk. He's 3 weeks old. I went to the doctor today with him and she didn't even look at it when I told her I think I might have it.. I need a new doc!

You can go to the chemist and get daktarin gel apply it to your baby and your nipples and it will be gone in less than a week. You will know if you do have thrush your nipples will be red and itchy and your baby will have white spots in the mouth.

I had thrush VERY bad during the first 5 weeks after my daughter was born. I suggest getting to your doctor, although I can't promise they will be helpful. Mine told me that the burning/itching/excrusiating pain was "normal soreness" and that maybe I wasnt cut out for breastfeeding and to switch to formula. I was devestated, since I am very pro-breastfeeding.
You may notice that your nipples and areola become shiny, almost as though they are sunburned. You might notice pimply bumps and there may or may not be white on your nipples (your dr may tell you that you dont have it if there is no white, this is NOT true). I did not have the white, and my dr said I couldn't have it, but after speaking with my lactation consultant and also with a La Leche League leader, I discovered I did have it. The pain was unbearable -- I was at my wits end with it, as I said I had it for 5 weeks before I found out what it was. My baby also never showed signed, however she was VERY fussy at the breast while nursing, for what seemed to be no reason. Finally I was able to convince my OBGYN to give me a script for diflucan (Sp?), which is a one time pill that is safe to take while nursing. If you dont have thrush, the medicine wont hurt you so try to talk your OB into trying it. Also, a good home remedy would be to get bacitracin (sold over the counter at drug stores) or acidophilis, which is the same stuff found in yogurt (also eat los of yogurt). You can get infant acidophilis also, and just put a fingerfull of the powder in the baby's mouth twice a day to get rid of the thrush. Definately treat the baby even if she is not showing signs, because although the pediatrician may tell you he doesnt have it, sometimes there are no symptoms. GOOD LUCK! I also wanted to add that although you discovered your odor was from the soap, I experienced an odd odor after nursing (I only noticed it in the left breast though). I had internal bleeding and had straight blood coming from my milk duct. I oculdn't tell until my daughter started spitting up straight blood -- very scary! Because my problems with thrush went so long untreated, I ended up with an infection and clogged duct, which led to the internal bleeding. The pain was unreal -- I was breaking into a sweat every time I would feed her. I would cry just thinking that in another hour and a half I'd have to do it again. So even if you're not sure if you have thrush, treat it as if you do!! The acidophilis is good to take even as a precaution. I take it daily and give it to my daughter as well.

I told my doctor, she said that because I am not breast feeding i am just pumping not to worry and to continue feeding him pumped milk...she didn't even check me out, seriously...I NEED a new doctor! My nipples are a little shiney, not itchy really not burning at all but a few times a day I will get a stabby sharp pain in them.. I am pretty sure it's a mild case of thrush, it's really not bothing me to much yet. I will definitly get it checked at my 6 week appt, If it's really bothering me or seems to get worse I will make her check at my baby's next appointment. it's just really a pain in the ass...lol

I would try using something over the counter right away to see if you can nip it now. Trust me, it can get a LOT more painful than what you are experiencing. I had those sharp pains as well, and there were times I couldn't even put my arms down because it was so painful. I used to wake up in the middle of the night from the pain. Also, in the mean time you can also put either hot or cold compresses on them. I found that hot made the itching/burning worse, so I used cold. But do what works for you, most people prefer the hot I think. But I really suggest getting some acidophilis (from any health store) or bacitracin. Also, you can try baking soda mixed with water, and that is safe to rub ob your nipples and in the baby's mouth. The level of yeast (which causes the thrush) is high in the breast because of the dark, warm, moist area in and around the nipple. I was told by pediatrician and OBGYN that it can not pass through the milk, but when I talked with my La Leche consultant she said that it actually can. And better safe than sorry, because if the baby does have it and it goes untreated, you most likely will get it back again.

mom2b.. I was afraid to use anything because I wasn't 100% sure that I had thrush, but I really think I do and the pain seems to be getting a little worse, so I will pick soomething up for sure tomorrow....BTW..are you still a mom2b or did you have your baby..my guess is you had him/her since it sounds like your breast feeding lol! My baby is 1 month old today.. I also have a son 23 months old...my hands are full...specially with the baby being extreamally colic!

Julie -- Diflucan is safe eithe way, as are the home remedies (baking soda and water, acidophilis, etc). But baking soda and water or a topical cream they may prescribe will only kill yeast ON the breast/nipple not IN. If you have the sharp pains and arent just itchy and red then a pill would work better. GOOD LUCK!
I did have my baby, in Jan. She is 11&1/2 weeks now. My yeast infection and thrush went untreated for 5 weeks... what a horrible first experience with breastfeeding! The only god thing is I got so much info on infections, thrush, and breastfeeding that now I'm well prepared for anything... haha. And I go to LLL meetings and they are very helpful!

Something that worked for me was gentian violet. Nothing else worked for my sons mouth really...I put that on my nipples and after 3 days it was gone for good. It stains so your baby might have a purple mouth though lol
