false labor, or Braxton Hicks contractions feel crampy and are usually down low. Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular or "practice" contractions starting around the eighth month that prepare the uterus for labor. Unlike true labor, Braxton Hicks contractions aren’t painful and don’t get stronger and closer over time. They vary in length and time apart. Real contractions won't stop if you move to another position or move around. A good way to test is if you have been lying or sitting still, get up and do something... move around. If you have been active, rest lying down on your left side. Get a timer and time how far and how long the contractions are lasting. I had Braxton Hicks contractions often for the last month and a half of my first pregnancy. If you still aren't sure, don't be afraid to contact your OB, that's what they are there for. If your water breaks, or you start bleeding, go to the ER.
