i had a miscarriage friday night (7-14-06) and i am devastated. i was 9 weeks pregnant and was bleeding a bit from a pap smear i had done the day before. i went to the ER when i started passing clots. They were so big and i was in so, so much pain. Then all the pain went away (well, the physical pain) and it's been a day and there havent been any more clots. The ultrasound they did last night proved my baby was not there anymore. Should i go to the doctor to make sure everything is out of my uterus or what am i supposed to do? my husband wants to sue the doctors' assistant cause he thinks she caused the miscarriage. is that a possibility? I NEED ANSWERS PLEASE!!!!

So sorry to hear about your miscarriage. Were you bleeding before the pap?
I know when they do a pap they do touch the cervix but not inside uterus. Do you feel allot of pain during the pap?

Yes, you're supposed to make sure everything is out, however, I don't understand how those morons did an ultrasound, yet not examined you nor had the pathologist to examine the baby and his/her parts. Also, your husband should sue because I endured the same thing (in 1995), and never had a baby until April of this year.

Some doctors are truly incompetent!

thats what's so upsetting renee! i was PERFECT before i went for the pap, everything was going great. we were all so excited, and everyone called me to congratulate me. then the pap felt so bad, it felt very uncomfortable. what a coinciedence that just after the pap i lost my baby. my friend also went with that dr. and the same P.A. did the pap on her, she said she was so rough and rude, asking why she'd having a baby at 19 if she's not married. that's none of her business! my friend wanted to start a family (she's in the army) instead of going to iraq and possibly be killed. i would do the same thing. she realizes it was a mistake enrolling and now she want so take a different route in life. The PA told her she just wanted an excuse to escape the war and called her a coward. shes behind me 110% in trying to get her out of practice. im just soooo devastated because this wasnt my baby's fault, he/she never had a chance at life because of this stupid b***h's mistake. i wish i had never gone to her, maybe my baby would still be alive

That is aweful. As as far as that sorry excuse of an assistant goes, I would have seriously had to curse her out. How dare she question anyone?

Now, thanks for the details. I do believe it was her fault, and you should get to an attorney ASAP and explain that you were not having any complications, bleeding or anything prior to the pap smear.

Also, hearing your story makes me glad that I refused a pap smear. You see, I had selected a new doctor when I found out that I was pregnant. Therefore, the new doctor wanted to do a pap when I was just eight weeks, but I told her I had already gotten one three months prior (which I had), and she would simply have to get a copy from my former doctor.

You really need to get your complaint into an attorney ASAP. I would recommend an excellent one, but he is in Maryland.

Losing a baby is hard, and I hope you conceive very soon. Just keep praying ok, but pursue the suit as well.

Is there a reason why they did a pap in the first place at 9 weeks. Just curious. I had one in the beginning of my pregnancy when I was like 5 weeks but didn't have one until after the baby was born.

Although pap are not comfortable and do occassionally cause some bleeding afterwards. It shouldn't have been painful. It is true that a pap doesn't touch the cervix but it almost sound like she might have.

I dont understand why they did a pap smear.

a friend of my mom's went through the same thing. it's not fair and i dont want this to happen to anyone else! Having a miscarriage is hard enough, but knowing that it couldve been avoided is killing me! maybe she did it wrong or went in too far. im scared because my proffesor (a former attorney) had mentioned that nowadays it's becoming more difficult to sue for malpractice. i love my doctor, and the pap she did on my last pregnancy did not cause any bleeding whatsoever. it was done a little later though, at about 12-13 weeks.

i never though i would be in this situation. i was soooo happy about my appt. because i thought i would hear her/his heartbeat.i just wanted to make sure she was okay. how could this assistant refuse to even TRY to hear the heartbeat? that way i would have proof that my baby was ok that day and that she was responsible for my loss.

do they still do pap smear even if you're pregnant? wouldn't that hurt the baby?

sorry about your loss... I hope you're doing ok.

I'm still just wondering if there was a reason you had the pap done.

Name: MOM2B | Date: Jul 17th, 2006 3:36 AM
I was bleeding and begged for a sonogram. If I did not beg...I would think everything was ok.

im very sorry to hear of ur loss..i got a pa done to i was like 2 months pregnant but i didnt bleed it did hurt but not to bad...my mom is also pregnant and she was tearong when she had hers done also she bleed a lil but we are both fine so i really dont kno wat happened sorry

So you asked for a sonogram and got a pap instead? Okay these are completely different procedures and the nurse does realize this right? I would have wanted to know what exactly they were looking for. One of my really good friends actually started bleeding at 9 weeks and the doctor did a sonogram to make sure everything was okay. Turned out that she was having twins and one of the sacks had started to pull away for the wall. I have a feeling you would have been fine as well. They could have always did a pap after the sonogram if they saw something that didn't look right. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this.

I want to offer my condolences vane, and as much as this is killing you I know that you can make it through this. The sh***y part about this whole situation is that you may never know why you miscarried. It seems very logical that it could have been the dr.'s appt., but it could also be something totally unrelated. Don't beat yourself up wondering why it happened. Give yourself some more time to heal 1st. I've heard of many women who ask for a sonogram early in their pg and don't get it, which i think is total bs. I got to have one at 8.5 weeks. I think that every woman should be allowed at least one when she asks for it. I also had a pap smear that same day to check for STDs and such, but it didn't hurt; I just felt the normal pressure. You probably won't be able to sue her for monetary compensation, but you could still get the state med review board to look at her practice and such. I would write a letter to the state and also have your friend do the same. When my friend was pg w/ her 1st, she was 17, and went in for a mc, the nurse made very innappropriate comments about her age as well. They're supposed to be med professionals and unfortunetly oftentimes they're like playground bullies.

sorry about your loss vane20. was this the 1st pap you had since finding out you were pregnant? with me, i have always had a pap at the very beginning, depending on when i found out, just to test for any std's, etc. i also had one once a month with my first pregnancy because of a broken bone in my vagina area. thankfully, none of the procedures ever resulted in a miscarriage. i did have a miscarriage in 2004, and my doctor just did a blood test once a week until my hcg level was below 100. i bled on and off for 3 weeks, (give or take a couple of days). i was 12 weeks when i miscarried, (i had no idea i was pregnant...i was on the patch!!!!) i never had to go in for a d&c or anything. my body did it all naturally. i originally thought i was on my period, but after 7 days of bleeding, (i usually only bleed for 3), i knew something was up.
good luck with everything.

this was my 1st pap since i got preg. and i went to the doc this morning and she told me my hcg was way too low in the er (2218). according to her, it shouldve been up in th 50,000. she said maybe the baby never developed, but it sucks cause im never going to know. also i didnt need a d&c, which is relieving cause i thought maybe that would affect my chances of getting pregnant again. but ur right kristy, i think im gonna make a complaint about her attitude. dr's shouldnt treat their patients like that. maybe shes done that to other women and someone should at least investigate or something.` dr. told me to wait about 3 mos. to try again. i think im gonna keep going to her cause she's great, but i dont want to see her assistant ever again. im always gonna associate her to my miscarriage, no matter if it wasnt really her fault, but who knows? she left me traumatized. thank you all for ur comments, god bless i hope i can cope with this a little better as time goes on

Hi vane20, I had my first meeting with my OB-doctor today, I was going to ask her if I can skip the pap-smear because of your story... she said it is totally safe for the baby so I said "fine"... it did hurt but I was not bleeding...

I think you should sue the doctor's office or the assistant if you think you were being mistreated there. It's a serious matter.

i'm so sorry to hear that you miscarried. that is the hardest thing ever. when i lost my first baby i thought there was more my doctor could have done for me. like had put me on bed rest or something. but now all i can think is that if i wouldn't have lost that baby i wouldn't be having this one. almost exactly a year later. but maybe you should talk to a lawyer and see if you can sue.

Name: vane20 | Date: Jul 18th, 2006 12:26 AM
i wasnt bleeding either until about 6 hrs after the pap. dont get me wrong, after a pap it IS normal to bleed, cause they say the cervix is super sensitive when ur preg., but if you get bad cramps and there's more than blood coming out of u, that's when u should be concerned. im not sure if i can sue yet, cause maybe the miscarriage was going to happen anyway. 1st i need to get myself together again, cause i cant really think straight right now. u guys have been a lot of help, and im sooo glad i discoverd this site

one thing you will find, if your anything like i was. is that everyone on earth is pregnant. i would get so mad at everyone that was getting to have a baby and i wasn't. i just hated the world. i guess everything happens for a reason though.

Name: vane20 | Date: Jul 18th, 2006 12:45 AM
u took the words right out of my mouth jenn. My best friend, my neighbor, and another friend are all pregnant. AND WERE DUE THE SAME WEEK! I just can't look at them without getting jealous and angry, then i start crying. i guess i need time to see them again, but im afraid it's gonna get worse when they start showing. can u believe THREE girls around me pregnant and due the same week? yea, it was super exciting and we were so happy, making plans to go shopping to buy maternity wear and everything, and now, it's like i cant evern think about them without busting into tears. how long did it take u to face the world again?

vane, r you and your husband going to try again? I don't know how long one should wait before attempting to get pg, but I was just wondering. I never realized how devestating a mc could be until I became pg and attached the this little one that I;ve never met. It's so unfair how some women get pg and don't even want it, while others like you have to lose the child that has made them so happy. I have a feeling that you'll be expecting soon, and please screw that P.A. ugh what a b***h!!

i want to thank everyone who responded to my post. It's been almost 2 weeks since i lost my baby and im starting to feel a little better. i have an appt. monday to see if my uterus has gone back to normal. my Dr. said we shouldnt try to get pregnant again until 3 months. we've never used condoms only the pill, and i dont wanna get on the pill cause i want to try again right away. my husband says he wont use a condom and im telling him my body needs to recover but he says he just wont come in me, but i know probably wont be effective. also, we a havent had sex in almost 2 weeks and he says it's ok, but im following dr's orders. he gets super pissed when i tell him no. im tired of avoiding being alone with him because any chance he gets he tries to have sex. dont get me wrong, i love making love, but right now i dont. im afraid we wont make it through these 3 months. what can i do to make him understand? what i tell him goes in thru one ear and comes out the other!

you do need to go to the doctor to have a DNC done. If they don't get everything out it could get infected and cause you never to have kids again.. I had four miscarriages before this one stuck and I really got sick of DNC's. And if im not mistaken they are not suppose to preform pap smears on pregnant women because of the fact that it could cause a miscarriage.
