Hi everyone, i am 15 years old. Well i starved myself for about two years, Right now my bmi is 16 so i might still have anorexia, but not as bad... Could i have gotten heart damage? I ask this because my left section of my chest would always skip beats and randomly start surging with pain. If i did have heart damage, do i still now, or could my heart repare itself? And is there such a thing as overeating, and starving yourself? i usually eat nothing for two days, then i will eat everything in sight and can't stop?

i cant say i know exactly how you feel but i have starved myself before. i eat a lot after two or three days and i found out from my health class at school its because humans need a certain amount of carbs and when we dont eat our bodies are like freaking out when we finally do give them food so they just want more of what they need. im sorry if i didnt help you.
im glad you are strong enough to over come part of being anorexia...

I accidently came across this website, and I don't think that it was by chance. I'm not a doctor and for all I know, you could be someone completely different from whom you say that you are. If you are being truthful, first of all, you MUST see a doctor. Get some counseling (from a trained professional, not your best friend) and as scary as it has got to seem, tell an adult (most likely your parents) that you can trust. If you go to church, tell someone there (an adult ) that you can trust. I am a 20 year old female and I had a few friends that had disorders when I was your age. I couldn't help them. I'm not a doctor, please get help. I have recently found information that says, "yes", you could have damaged your heart somehow. You need to get help as soon as possible so any problems that may have formed can be resolved. I had very low self esteem when I was about 13 until about 17. I will tell you now that I only reason I made it through was because of the personal relationship that I have with God. If I didn't know, beyond a shadow of a doubt , that He saved me, says that I am BEAUTIFUL, WORTHY, and PRECIOUS to Him, I wouldn't have made it. Please get help and don't ever give up. You're too young to be subjected to all this worldly body image garbage. There is so much more out there to find joy in. Only God will fulfill any emptiness that you feel and only God will give you the love that you need (no human boy can ever do that, don't be mistaken like so may women). Although I don't know you, I want you to know that my heart goes out to you. You'll probably never hear from me again and I'll probably never hear from you, but I will pray for you as long as I remember.
Luv in Christ

Hannah - Not eating damages your heart please seek help. I'm the mother of a 15 year old that almost died in March and whom has worked very hard to get in her bottom end of healthy weight and heart has mended so far.

Hey, It's been a while since U have read posts, but thanks for all the replies. I don't think i will tell anyone, it is a really scary thing to think about. It is like a secret that no one can know about, I know i must sound selfish, but you wouldn't understand unless you had the disease. But again thanks for the comments, especially the one from not a doctor, that was really sweet, i think i might actually go to church for the first time in a year heh.

love hannah

Hi Hannah. It's good that you have tried to find a place to ask your questions. You must be very worried, not only about what you may have done to your body in the past, but also about how you feel now. Being 15 isn't easy, but having an eating disorder as well means you have a lot to deal with. I am sure there are days when you feel overwhelmed by it all.

Your body is a remarkable thing, and it can repair itself very well if you are able to eat normally and return to a healthy weight. A BMI of 16 is quite low, and you need to try and increase this a little bit. A BMI of 16 for a 15 year old is not as bad as it is for a 20 year old, but it still carries some risk. If you lost your weight gradually then the strain on your body is a lot less, however continuing to be BMI 16 does carry risk longer term, in particular your bones. If you can get to a weight where you are having your periods regularly, then your body is saying it is in a fit state to repair itself.

If you eat nothing for 2 days, your body (and head) will actively seek out food. It is an evolutionary mechanism which all animals have. For example, if you need 2500Kcals per day and don't eat for 2 days, your body will want to try and eat 5000 at the first opportunity. This is not actually being greedy, it is just your body doing what it would do naturally (if we were still living in caves etc!). The best thing you can do is seek advice about how much you would need to eat to MAINTAIN your weight for the time being. Eating regularly, and getting good nutriiton (but not gaining weight) helps shift your thinking and can enable you to contemplate change. At 15 it's not too late to change. A part of me thinks that you care about yourself, and are worried about your actions, you need to take that motivation forward and talk to a professional who can help you. If you are in the UK visit the EDA www.edauk.com they have confidential phone lines for teenagers to call (tele: 0845 634 7650) or you can text on: 07977493345.

I work with teenagers with eating disorders every day, it's not easy going through this Hannah, but reach out to someone you trust and you will have taken the first step.

Good Luck

Hi, thanks i don't know i have my period like every three months i don't know if that is normal or not. But, I live in the U.S. not U.K. so i guess the phone won't work. Also, it might not be confidential. Thankyou for responding, I thought this was useless but apparently not. I was wondering if there was somewhere I can go without having to tell my parents to talk about my ED. I do think I need help.

Hi Hannah,
My name is Sharon Milligan, I am conducting a study on eating dissorders in Scotland. In the Uk we have self help groups that people who are suffering from eating dissorders can attend anomonysly where your parents wont find out. If you go to ure doctors they might be able to help with these things or if you run a search for self-help groups. The web sight the dr on this page gave you is very helpful, you could e-mail one of the counsellors of that and they might be able to give you more info. I hope you get help soon x

Hey Hannah,
I am not an expert on the heart and effects from not eating. Like you I am so conscious about my weight and I feel a terrible guilt when I eat a lot and/or don't eat a thing. Some advice I could offer you that is absolutely just advice, never an order =). I have been told that not eating for a long period of time and then eating suddenly like that can have really negative effects on your metabolismm. Like when you eat regularly you have a reasonably high metabolism which means that your body burns up the fat a lot quicker. But when you stop eating and then eat suddenly its kind of like a shock to your body and it takes a lot longer to burrn up that fat. If you get what I mean.

So when I heard this I thought about it seriously and instead of going without the meals completely, try things like:
*Instead of 3 meals a day I eat at breakfast, which is museli and a banana (or you could try wholemeal toast as things with fibre actually burn calories while you are eating them and they keep you regular so you are digesting the food normally anyway). Then I have a meal at 4:30 which is really what I consider as Dinner. This can be anything you like wether you want really healthy or not. The reason I eat so early is because it takes approx 3 hours on average to digest solid food this means that by about 7:30 your food has digested fully and your body isn't under the stress it kindawould be when you go to sleep as it takes a lot more work. So anyway after 4:30 I wait about an hour and do my own thing (I call it me time lol) then if you feel up to it I make myself feel better by shaking my booty and dancing to my favourite songs!!! It is an excellent form of exercise and it just helps take away that guilt that nags at you (you may know what I mean). Also Dancing is said to release a chemical in your brain called endorphines. These make you a happy chappy and when your happy in your head I find you can be happy with yourself. I find it helps me to love me!!!

I hope some of the stuff I have told you helps times can be hard but they are always such a test. Be happy with who you are because the only person you should feel you need to please is YOURSELF!!!

Peace out!

Greer
