My son is going to be a junior next year he has always done well in scholl .He is thinking about finishing has schooling at home. He has been going to an opptional school and maintains a 4.3 gpa. He is so tired of teachers not really teaching and he feels they waist so much time he is also tired of how crowded the school is and all the politics involved. So here are my question 1) how much of my involvement is needed? 2) is it all done by computer? 3) how organized does he need to be.(because he has a problem with that) 4) what is the cost? 5) Who do we register with? here in memphis most people register with Gateway and and or they the only option?
Thats just some of the questions I have.I might add I did home school him in 1st and 2 nd grade. and loved it.But now that he is 16 we don't communicate as well as we used to do.I am a stay at home mom with a hone business that takes up alot of my time. Plus I have a 8 yr old that is in school and I have to work with her on her school work and that takes a lot of my time and pateince. So Im realistic to know, I don"t have a lot of spear time to set up lesson plans for him.

Well, I would be naturally concerned about the lack of time you have to dedicate to homeschooling your son. Though, at his age, he should be more independent. #1 & 2 --You will need to help him figure out a curriculum, or a computer-based schooling, or a private-based schooling. It seems that you are looking at a computer-based schooling...and I am not familiar with such. I pick and chose curriculums and physically teach (biblically, books, lessons, field trips, homeschool group, etc.). I am assuming you don't have the luxery of time for that. But, I am sure if you do some searches on the internet you can find such as you're looking for (or maybe assign such a search/report from your son since he is the interested party...and it would be a good test of his self-learning skills). #3 He will not need as much organizational skills as he will need self disapline. He will need to be able to prioritize (school before lolly) and set some goals (successful graduation, or a college bound education). And you will need to be disaplined enough to help guide him appropriately. At his age, you need to be aware of appropriate credits toward whatever goal he has. As well as provide him the resourses for post-graduation opportunities weither it be adult living skills, career specific volunteering, or college scholarships. #4 Cost...well, the style i use costs me about $350 or so per child...I am not sure about what the computer education programs...include that in your (or his) research. #5 Again...research. I am hoping that I have helped a bit. I hope that someone with experience with computer simulated education will reply to help you further. Good luck...keep us posted...

There is no way you should home school your son. You spelled what should be 'waste' as 'waist'. You're in no fit condition to do this. Send him to a different school because all you'll do is hold him back. I'm 16 and in a public school and love it, it doesn't challenge me a lot so when I'm at home I teach myself Psychology, Philosophy and Law on top of all my homework. Maybe send your son to different classes after school with educational purposes.

Im feel so sorry for you. That your brain is so closed minded that you have to judge people by a miss spelled word. If you would do the research you would find that some of our most intelligent scholars can not spell or write well. This is also completely his choice.I will support him by what he decides is best for him. Thats what good moms do.
So in other words get a live!

there are alot of people on this board that miss spell words. alot of times people are in a hurry and miss type not spell. we all do big deal. but then again Kelly is 16 and that explains alot.

Thank you Layne for that reply.
But how dare us as experienced adults and mothers to think that we would know more then a 16 yr old kid! How silly of me.

I need help....I have tried so hard to teach my 5 year old her vowel sounds...she will do well while we're doing it then 10 minutes later I will ask her what sound an "a" makes and she won't know. Can anyone give me some tips on how to maybe get her to know them? I've tried alot of different things but nothing seems to be working. She knows all the constant sounds but for some reason she can't get the vowels.
YOu can email me at [email protected]. It will probably be easier on both of us....at least me...lol
Thank you in advance for any help.

concerned mom, it sounds like what your looking for is not a homeschooling situation, but a distance learning program. distance learning is done mostly online, or through books and materials provided (usually at your cost) by the school. a teacher oversees the education and is avalible for questions by email and sometimes phone. your responsibility as the parent is to make sure they are making progress and keeping up with the work, you usually have a weekly contact with the teacher(s) as well.
there are tons of these programs avalible and from your coments about time and lesson plans etc. it sounds like this would be better suited for your son. just a thought, maybe it would be worth looking into. good luck to both of you

Have you tried the Leap Pad Videos...Both my children love them and watch them over and over....the first one is Letter Factory. This teaches letters and sounds in a whole new way...the second one is Talking words factory. This teaches the children how to put sounds together to make words...then their is Story book Factory. This teaches children how words are put together to make stories.. the last one in the series that I know of is Math circus....this teaches them their numbers and how, when put together they can be added or subtracted.....
My daughter is 3 and knows most of her letters and what sounds they make....as well as most of her numbers from 1 to 10....

For concerned mom,
I am using the program K12 for my son. I had to pay this year because my son just missed the cut off date for Kindergarden..however the state takes over next year and pays for almost everything...I live in ohio and I know this state has this program but I am not sure about yours...Go to K-12.com and you can look it up...It is wonderful..the state pays, they loan you a computer with printer, and it is all done online...
check it out...
Good Luck!

And as for Kelly,
I understand how maybe you may think people are not smart by how they spell. I wonder what your report card looks like...I got straight A's in all my classes but spellin. I got F's why???....My father is from another country and all my life I have learned to spell listening to how the word sounds.. Homeschooling my son had helped me to change how I look at words...When someone from another country tries to learn another language they tend to spell thing exactly how they sound....Instead of picking on them or even people like me who got straight A's in math and english but had trouble in spelling. Try just being kind and overlooking there mistake...You may need the same consideration someday...
Good Luck Everyone
