I think it's really comforting that you all can relate to my situation with my 7 y/o son. After meeting with the school Psychologists, they all expect that he has ADD, I did let them as well as the teacher know that I was not too comfortable with drugs as I did not want my son to turn in to a walking zombie. Instead of the Psychologists or the teacher addressing any questions or concerns I may have they all urged me to trust the meds, and not be alarmed by possible side affects. I thought this was in poor taste, because I got the feeling the teacher especially wants this to happen to make her job easier. I definately don't judge anyone who uses medication, I think they're very helpful. I would like to avoid them if all possible. For a teacher to pretty much tell me that sure he may lose weight, or be zoned out for a few months, but he'll be calm it pretty unsettling. I would rather have my son hyper and full of life rather than have him in a sedated-like state all day. Any thoughts? Words of encouragement? Help at all? :)

They have recently diagnosed my son with ADD and have put him on medication wich I think was the easy way out a quick fix. there are many ways that you can tend to add by controling the diet and I am very frustrated not with my son but with the doctors .

My son has also said my son has ADD and they are insisting on Ritalin. So many contradicting stories on Ritalin, anyone can speak from experience? Please let me know. Thanks

Just wanted to share that my son has ADD. He is 12 yrs old and was diagnosed when he was 7. He has problems with focus, attention, repetative behaviors and impulsivity. He has been on medication for many years. He started on Adderall and it helped with the repetative tendancies, but didn't help much with the attention span. He didn't have any side effects with the medication, but his doctor and I discussed other options. He has been on Vyvanse for about 4 yrs and is doing wonderful with it. He has no side effects and his grades and behavior at school have been good ever since. I am a nurse and I know how difficult it is to put your child on medication since they are young and your not sure how it will affect them, but I can honestly say that if I wouldn't have put my son on medication his grades would have suffered and he would have struggled. Since I have dealt with this for several years, I would encourage parennts to seek out Neuropsych testing to determine if it is really ADD or something else and to make sure your child has behavior/social therapies through a psychologist or counselor. Most school systems have social skills classes or special ed teachers that can assist in behavioral modification. Start early and know that all children are different, just accept them as they are!

children are human - doesn't add mean lacking attention - are you're children getting enough food, sleep. Everything in moderation - you don't eliminate fruit from a child's diet - that's horrible. You also don't tell them they can't have pop - do YOU drink pop. Treat them like you would want to be treated - they rely on you for food - how would you like to ask for something you want to eat and not be able to have it - do not suffer your children - they are the same as you. Discipline bad behaviour but not too much - make sure you understand why they are acting out - are they tired, do they need a good full stomach full of things they love to eat and a bed in a quiet house to sleep! Priortiy - children. Love, food, shelter, rest - ADD is a random label easy to throw at children rather than getting at the root of the problem - lack of understanding -

No, drugs are not needed to treat ADD. You can "treat' ADD by giving your child support. Here is a list of ideas:
Help your child with managing time by using a timer or sitting next to him while doing homework
Teach your child how to organize by using to do lists, agendas, or calenders.
Talk to your child's teacher on what helps him so she/he can help implement this in the classroom for him.

Hope this helps :)
