I have a daughter with Dyspraxia. At the age of 2 she spoke only 20 or so words and many of the where not intelligable. I was advised by her Occupational therepist to buy a trampoline and within a month her words were clearer and she started to speak in 2 word sentences. She is still delayed in both speech and her gross motor skills but catching up to her age group with the help of a good speech and Occupational therepist and many hours playing games and reading.

My son is 21 months old and he has recently been saying Ma ma but not all the time. I think he only knows five words, Mama, Dada, ball, bye bye, Papaw, and Wa Wa (for water).

You're not alone. My 27 month old son only says between 5-10 words and most of them he says unclearly. The "norm" is 50+ words at this age. My son also understands mostly everything we say to him and points at things we wants. you should look into speech therapy. We just started speech. also, have you had his hearing tested? that could also be a reason

When your son get his test. If your son can do things sometimes but not all time. Then your answer to the tester is "No he can not do". It will benefit your son if he get dianoge as autism. He will get free services as long as he needed.

It is most likely that if a infant or toddler is just speaking some or few words...it may just be a sign that they need more attention or that they may need to be spoken to directly at them.
I have a 1 year old and she is that kind if you don't talk directly to her she will not respond or talk, and before she used to talk all the time, but some cases is that your toddler may need a little bit more attenion or needs to be spoken more to.
I hope this can help you a little.

I shouldn't worry to much, i,ve two kids and my youngest copies everything my eldest does. My eldest has got a speech and language problem, but my youngest talks, so i'm hoping that help him on.
Just let nature takes its course. He'll proberly grow out of it.

Dear Tweety,
When my two year old wouldn't talk, I took her to the pediatrician. He said, "let's wait and see." Then I started doing research on autism. I found that not talking, poor eye contact and lack of pretend play or joint play were some of the signs. I suggest you go to "Autism Speaks" website right away. It took me several months sometimes to see a developmental MD because they're so in demand...so don't wait. Early intervention is key.

my son just turned 2 at 18 months he was saying about 20 words then about 4 months ago he just quit. we thought it was the new baby but it has been a long time now we took him for a hearing and speech screening and she said his hearing is fine and his vocabulary is at a 9-12 month level. But his gross motor skills are very advanced. I am worried very worried. He can understand simple directions like throw this away or shut the door. He used to name and point out body parts(eye ear nose hands feet) but now when I try to get him to play that game he just gets all ancy and wants away. He seems very frustrated when we try to get him to talk and sometimes he listens and other times he doesn't. I don't know if this is normal but has anyone else had this sort of problem? They say is could just be he is a late talker I am worried it might be something else. The doctor is pretty sure it isn't autism but his developmental screening isn't for 2 months!

Hi, My son who will be 3 in October doesn't say anything. He babbles a lot and may try to say words but it doesn't come out clear. He has worked with people from "The School for Deaf and Blind" and has gotten tubes put into his ears because of frequent ear infections. He passed the hearing test back in November '08 which I see a lil' improvement with the babbling but not words. He now has a speech therapist who comes out to see him every week. He's not making too much progress with her and sometimes he gets frustated because she tries to show him something or helps him. I can tell now that he is a very independent lil' one. He has an appointment with a Developmental Pediactrian June 3 and I just pray that she can help him. I am very afraid that she will tell me he has Autism. I know something is wrong, but I just pray to God she doesn't he has it. I really do feel like he will be speaking soon. He doesn't say "mama or dada". He used to try and say "dada" but he doesn't now. Is there anyone else in my situation?

Hi, I have a 28 month old daughter who has severe speech delay. After all of her assesments they told me by age 2 they should have at least 50 words in their vocab, she barely has 15. They are talking autism, she is extremely smart and understands us, she just can not communicate her needs or wants. It is very important you have your child assessed at an early age for speech delays, and always always check the ears!!!

I am a mom of twin 2year olds But not normal 2 year olds. I met a man with three kids and I took them in as mine. Their Biological mother mistreated them very badly when I came into the picture they were 11 months old already and they barely eat. We are over the eating thing but they are now 2 and they only will say "mama, dada, damian, get down, and stop it." I cant get them to say anything else. I try. They only say those words when they feel like it and never when some one asks. they are happy kids now they even give high fives. I just dont know what to do. I know they understand me because i have them able to pick up toys and put their blankets and doggies on their beds. Please anyone what should I do.
