Hello, I was wondering if anyone here has/had or knows someone that has a amazon? If so I'm hopeing you can give me some advice. I have two DB Yellow Head Amazons, Pookie 8yr and Cracker allmost 11 years.

I love Cracker to death, shes a sweet, snugel type bird allways talking or singing to us, tells us hello when we get up in the morning or come in the door, bye bye when shes covered up at night or we leave the house she will even sing bop a ram to us. Shes fairly easy to train and loves to walk around the house with you and hop in the shower and be where the action is. She even helps keep the house quiet when the kids or dogs are playing too loud by telling them to go lay down(the dogs) or quiet down(kids). LOL. Shes a trip!

Then theres Pookie. He's a rescue bird, lived in a 2 foot x 2 1/2 foot cage in a corner. I was told he wasn't handled much and didnt have any toys to play with and only one perch to sit on. he didn't say anything and he was severly narodic, he hung from the top of his cage swinging back and forth, he would do circles (start on his prech, climb up the side of the cage, across the top of the cage down the other side of the cage back on his perch and start all over again) and thats pretty much all he did. I brung him home and he screamed the whole three hours, talk about haveing a headache!

the second day I moved him into my old african greys cage which was four feet high and three feet wide and put in some good toys for him to chew on. For the first week he did nothing but scream from sun up to way beyond sun down. When Ireached in to change the water or food he would snap at me and ruffle up his feathers. I asumed in time he would calm down and get used to me being near his cage.

A few months past by and cracker was starting to show some interest in pookie so I moved their cages next to a while so they could see each other better. A few weeks latter I decided I would let them both out of their cages together and see if they would still get along. They did, infact Pookie moved rite into Crackers cage! Her cage is allmost 6 feet high and i think just over three feet wide so there was more then enough room for the two of them.

Now the real horror started. I couldn't get Pookie out! Thge darn bird attacks the side of the cage when I walk past it, when im standing there trying to feed cracker he reaches threw the bars to grab me and when he dose get out of tehcage he attacks me! What he dose is take flight and lands on my head squacking and biteing me! HA HA! Of corse he gets tangeled so I need help getting him off which only makes it worse! BUT when I am eatting soemthing or have a treat for him he coo's at me and flirts untill he eats it and sees its all gone. Then hes nasty old Pookie again.

Dose anyone here have any advice as to how I may get him to calm down at trust me enough where I can open the cage door and NOT get attacked? As it is I need someone else to distract him while I get fallen toys off the floor of the cage because he goes rite for my head! Is there anything I can do or is this the way he's allways going to be? Cracker likes Pookie, only gets testy with him when he tries to attack me or my feiance, any other time they are sitting next to each other.

Oh, I didn't move them together to breed, I did it because cracker was raised with other birds in her cage and had recently lost her cage mate of 9 years so I was trying to lift her spirits back up. I hope that makes sence. Any adivce? No, I really don't plan on getting rid of Pookie, I wouldn't know anyone who would take him even if I did want to!

Ive seen this done with birds before and it works. Put some gardening gloves on, that are thick, that he cant bite you through. When you have a time on your hands, take him out of the cage and handle him very gently. Let him bite you. Soon he will realise that your not going to hurt him, though you are the boss, and he will start to relax and realise biting you is useless.
Try it, it works, Ive seen it done with very vicious birds and it has turned them tame.

I love birds. They are so relaxing to watch and keep as pets. They have amazing characters. My cockatiel is really sweet. But sometimes she can be a bit naughty, I dont mind though, I like them a bit naughty, gives them personality!

We have a male Eclectus...they look like Amazons and when we first got him he was the same way....he was so bad that I wanted to give him back. it took us about a month to get him out of being such an a**..LOL. We basically made him come out of the cage and we would always get bit and trust me these werent no pecks...it would always draw blood but after he realized that we werent affraid of him and we werent going to hurt him he stopped. We had him out alot, we let him on the back of our couch when we would sit there and eventually he would come down onto us on his own to check things out...lol.

Thank you for the advice! I think I'll try the glove idea but try to find a pair that have the metal lining, like what the falcon handlers use LOL. When Pookie bites he's out for blood and chunks of skin! LOL.

I love birds too. I allso have a hanes macaw named Hanes (his previous owners named him), a love bird and a handfull of parakeets. I love hearing them chirp, they are like bringing nature inside the house. ok, that sounded corney LOL.

Again thanks for the advice and hopefully I can over come the fear of him latching onto my arm and mabe it'll work LOL.

Your welcome...and when I read your post I had to laugh about how he attacks your head...LOL, my bird did that too everytime we would reach in to get him or change his food and water, he also had this growl....like a frikin dog that he would do at us...LOL. We also have a Sulfer Crested Cockatoo and he tries to bully her because he thinks hes so big and bad but really hes a big baby!! We even have him to the point where we can wrap him up in a blanket and he loves it...LOL.
