We're moving house in few months time, and I'm hoping to move to the countryside, where I can have a bit of land, and potentially keep chickens as pets (preferrably rehabilitate battery caged hens) Does anyone have any experience of keeping chickens as pets? I already have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 birds and 3 fish so I'm confident I can cope. :)

If you live in a cold climate you will have to be sure that the coop is reinforced against the weather. Also there must be egg laying shelves in the coop and the whole coop including the shelves should have nesting materials such as hey or what ever is suggested through your local farm store. Be sure that their grazing are is fenced so that they will be safe from other animals/predators. as for feeding you can find good pet quality grains at a farm supply store, be sure it is pet quality food. Also did you know that chickens love ticks? they make great natural tick exterminators for the yard.

If it is winter months they generally will stay cooped, in the wormer months they will graze most of the day and return to the coop at night. You will have to provide more grain feedings during the cold months when they spend most of their days in the coop. In the wormer months they will do a lot of grazing eating many insects so there for they will eat less grain.

Fabulous. Do you keep chickens? We're hopefully moving to a house where we have alot of land, plenty of room for grazing, and a large chicken house. I'll have no problems letting them into the main kitchen if it is especially cold. I'm really looking forward to it!

No I don't keep chickens, but my neighbor does. I take it where you are moving there will be some cold months, not to worry if there coop is weather reinforced then they will be fine out side.

Yah..... they do poop a lot, however I did mention in the other Any one keep chickens post that there is a poop harness available for birds. People who have pet chickens will put this harness on them so that they can keep them in the house and not have the poop mess.

I had chickens for a long time in northern Wisconsin and they never had a proplem with cold. I probably wouldn't worry too much about reinforcing the coop, some chicken wire will probably due.
