I am excited, we are going to look at a dog from a shelter tomorrow. I wound up at a shelter today with a friend because she wanted to get a cat. I asked to see their dogs, I saw them, and all the ones I liked were adopted. On my way out I was chatting with the shelter worker and I mentioned that we had a Bernese at home and she said that there is a part Bernese at the vet being neutered. I looked at his pic, he doen't look like a Bernese but he is so goofy looking that you can't help but like him. I called my boyfriend and looked at his pic and said we will go see him tomorrow. My boyfriend doesn't want another dog, but he also can't turn down a sad face. Sorry for ranting on about this, but I am excited because this would be my very first dog, the Bernese was there before me.

We actually got the BEST dog we ever had from the shelter!! We had to put him down after 9 years due to tumors that could not be helped! He is truly missed and always will be! Good Luck on your new pet!!

molly-may that is great news! I love hearing storys of adoptions. There are so many dogs awaiting adoption and thousands get euthanized while waiting. I too got the best dog ever from a shelter! I just recientely adopted a 3lb four year old male Chihuahua from the local pound. I have found some of the best dogs at shelters and pounds. Good job for adopting, and not buying!

T-rabit you seem to be good with finding helpfull info! Will you please find some statistics on the number of dogs that are euthanized while waiting adoption each day, week, month or year? What ever you can find will be helpful! Thanks!

Both of our dogs came from shelters!!! We are still working with the puppy but she is a sweetheart. And my Toby, well, I love that dog so much. He is like on of my kids. I call them my furkids.
I always tell people, pretty much beg people to go and get dogs from shelters. Here is a website that has alot of shelters.

Well my boyfriend called to tell me that there is some labs that were just rescued on the side of the road. A man I work with volunteers for the lab rescue society so I am going to ask him. The mother was killed, someone beat her in the head and left her puppies. Someone found 4 on the side of the road when they were driving, then someone found three more while out walking. They are the cutest, I think they are part german shepard. I emailed the woman to see if we can look at those too. So I am waiting for my boyfriend to come to work and then we will be off to the shelter at lunch time. He wanted to bring in our dog so he can meet the dog at the shelter, but I told him to wait until our second visit.

Both of my dogs are German Shepherd/lab mixes. Like I said Nika is still a puppy, but Toby is almost 2 and the best dog. He also loves my kids. If the puppy is jumping on them he gets in between the puppy and the kids, or he will pull her away from them. It is so cute.

We got our Boo from the shelter yesterday. Him and Koda have been batteling it out. Last night there was a couple of really bad fights. One left blood on the floor. Mike came home from work and they were two totally different dogs. They were nice to one another. Mike has this magic touch. I was ready to ship him back to the shelter, but since it was my idea to get another dog, then I have to own up to it. Last night they played and they finally just passed out. This morning, they wait for one another, they play and they sleep together. I think Boo is going to be dominant, which is odd, since it was Kodas home first and he is the larger dog. We figure Boo is half Shepard and half Bernese. Mike called me this morning and told me Boo has been looking for me all morning. The poor dog was found in a home, in a cage full of poop and pee. He is so well adjusted for being a battered dog. He has cowered to one of Mike's friend, so we think that he reminded him of his last owner. I hope all is well in the end, I know it won't be magic but I hope in a week then they will not fight and be the bestest of friends.

We had a few issues at first. Toby doesn't really like other dogs, but now him and Nika are always together they lay down together and play all day long. The only time there are problems is if Nika gets rough with the kids. Toby doesn't like her around the kids to much.

When you have two males and one was already in the home there can be issues with domanance and terretory! Its always best to avoid conflict and keeping a balance, by geting the opposet sex dog from the already existing dog. sure there are exceptions and some same sex dogs can be worked with to curb the negative behavior, but if you dont want to cause dis rupt in the home then always get the opposet sex dog!
