My boyfriend just bought a baby pitbull but i am also 8 1/2 months pregnant, i am not so afraid to the point that the dog will hurt the baby i just wanted a few tips on how to get the dog used to the baby before its born...THANKS...

Your dog sounds wonderful. Your family would benfit from a training class. How wonderful would it be if your dog obeyed your commands! It's possble and anyone can do it!

I have a pit who loves everyone, he thinks that all the other animals around are to be played with and loved.Any cat or dog can come up to him and he starts giving kisses. As for having children around pitts they are great family dogs, I should know I have 5 children and have a daycare in my home. My dog is the best when it comes to any child. Do not listen to all the breedests out there they are that way because they dont know they just go by what they have heared in the news about the bad things that happen, no one ever has a news story about all the good and love they bring to so many families. Any dog can be mean, its all in how you treat them. If you love them they return it, if you abuse the dog it will be mean.

Dogs can sense it Hiddy. You are such the expert thought you would know that.

Dogs sense EVERYTHING!

Dear KcKayla,

Your hilarious, Dogs dont know your pregnant. They might know something is different about you, but they dont about the child until it is born.

I had two dogs when I got pregnant so I should know. They didnt have a clue. But when we brought my daughter home they stood at the bedroom door tilting their heads, as if to say-
"What is that thing?"

BTW... I went to your myspace page....foxyroxy is it?
You have too much crap on that page. You can hardly read it all because of the background, it took 10 minutes for my browser to shut down after I tried to exit. Did you know thats what your readers have to put up with. Myspace sites are bad enough without adding all the animated crap in there.

PS.... I liked your photo. Your a very pretty girl

I didnt see any dogs on your site.

The best thing I can recommend. Through experience. Is to let the dogs hear the baby crying first, because then when the baby does cry, it doesnt scare the dog.

Keep the baby at a distance for a while. And just let the dogs hear it cry. Then I didnt stick the baby in the dogs face and let it sniff it. I think this practice is dangerous. I put my daughter on the floor and sat down with her, then let the dog walk around us.
My dogs then sat down with us at a distance. Make sure you pat the dog a lot and tell you how much you love it, so its included in the whole experience. I NEVER put my dogs outside for the sake of the baby, so they never felt jealous.
But then again they were shelties and were small enough not to get in the way. Also, my dogs didnt jump up on people.

If you want to get a bit of distance between you and the dog before the baby is born. Start putting it outside at intervals NOW. That way the dog wont think it has been put outside BECAUSE OF THE BABY. Then it wont resent the baby.

Also....my dogs still slept on my bed too. Basically they didnt miss out on anything they had been used to when my daughter arrived on the scene.

I even dressed my female sheltie up in baby clothes. She loved it.

Thanks for the compliment...honestly I didnt think that you gave those. But thank you.
I was around all of my dogs when I was pregnant. My dogs would always jump up and wrap their legs around my waist as if they were giving me a hug. But from the time I was 8 weeks on they didnt they just came up and smelled by belly trying to lift my shirt up with their noses. They knew something was different. And once I had my baby they were very gentle coming up and sniffing her and laying right under her bassinet. And if anyone came over they stayed right there. As if they were protecting her. They are the same with my son.
Some dogs act differently. One of the best dogs I have will come up if I have been crying and very gently lick away my tears. He has always known when something was wrong.
Now my daughter is 6 months old. And they still all are very easy with her. If she cries they come running to make sure she is ok. Same with my son. I dont know maybe its just my dogs

I wouldn't worry. Introduce your dog to your child slowly. Don't shove your new baby in the dogs face. Please be sure to continue showering your pup with love as well. Just don't leave the two unsupervised together. That should go for any dog. Not just bully breeds.

you need to be correcting the behavior on the jumping. no offense but at that age you should've already been correcting it all along.

Name: I love my Pitbull | Date: Oct 22nd, 2006 8:43 AM
You really need to correct that behavior...You should take her to training of some sort...also when you are at the hospital and your husband comes home to let her out have him bring home a blanket with the babies smell so she can get to know her scent...Honestly you and your baby should be fine...my dog is hyper like that, but she is a rescue and is in the process of trianing, but she is very gentle around my son...she knows exactly how much energy to use around him...Goodluck and Congrats...

Regardless of the breed of the dog (that's really irrellevant), you know your dog. You know the dogs traits and characteristics. It really needs to based on that. I have a 4 year old APBT who I completely trust around children and babies, but I trained her well and she has had alot of exposure to little ones. No one here can really tell you whether you can trust the dog around a baby, regardless of whether its an Amstaff or a chihuahua, because they don't know your dog. Take it slow, introduce them with supervision and caution. ALL DOGS will react differently around new things so just take it slow.

Just wanted to add i am from the due date crowd and wanted to add that MY boyfriend and i Have 4 pits in our back yard one of our 3yr olds just had 9 puppies one week ago we have a 10yr old male 2 3yr old females a 9 month old male and 2 10week old males but i don't think i will trust the older ones around the baby or even when it gets older i will prolly keep it away from the older dogs.

Name: T-rabbit | Date: Oct 26th, 2006 6:18 PM
pit are extreamly hyper dogs. They require a lot of exercise. mine is 3 and I take him to p.t (physical training) mon.-fri. Try taking these dogs to a large frild once a day and let them run till there legs want to fall off. Tyson also likes to swim. They might not like it at first but once they are in they will wear them selfs out. If you have a treadmill put them on it. After a while they will mellow out.just keep working with them.
They stay pups in the head a lot longer than other dogs establish your dominance and correct that jumping. Put a leash on him make him sit step on the leash and have you or your husband walk up. When he tries to jump he wont get any air this way. put him back is the sit position and keep doing it all over. dont use a sissy sit please. tell him SIT loud and bold get his attintion.

T-Rabbit,

Thats bad advice. Wont get any air? Thats cruel.

The only way to train a dog that actually WORKS is positive reinforcement. Do NOT use food because dogs are smart, and many dogs that are trained using food rewards only do what they are told when there is food around.

Dont use a check chain either.

You should teach your dog the SIT and STAY command. When they sit and stay, they should be praised, they will soon learn that this is desirable behaviour. That way when they jump up on you, and they are told NO....they have a replacement behaviour, which is to SIT.

Name: Hiddy | Date: Oct 26th, 2006 9:37 PM
and actually, NO is not a good command. Because it can apply to many things. You should choose a command like DOWN.

i wnt 2 no is me n my man n love

Name: Bethany | Date: Nov 6th, 2006 11:30 PM
Wow Hiddy...for once I agree with you! ha ha. "Down" is a great command..that way it can't be confused!

Name: T-rabbit | Date: Nov 7th, 2006 11:17 PM
ok for the slow people in the house you do this with a regular collar. And who in the hell said any thing about NO that is not a command duh!!

alot of differant things u can do in this sitch. first of all make time for hyperness make sure you get the dog worn out then feed it whatever you want its schedule to be but make time with the baby you can just bring the dog into the room with the child and make sure you move slowly and bring the dog to the realization that it needs to be sllow and gentle around the baby. Then make sure the dog knows the seperate times for being crazy and settleing down my male was 1.5 years he's a old family red nose he was so protective of the baby after a week he would sleep under her bassenet and growled whenever we would come in at night. They are great watch dogs and are the greatest most well rounded animals in the world.Be patient and get sum baby/dog gates and seperate them but dont seclude them, and never leave the dog secluded away from you and the baby they get really jelous
