Hiddy, if you are soooooo sure of all your factual evidence against "pitbulls", please post a link to the scientific study that cited the findings that you've been harping on.

Such as, post a link to a site where a lisenced vetrinarian reports that "pitbulls" or pitbull-type dogs have locking jaws.

Dear Caroline,

Pitbulls lock on when they attack. Their unusually wide mouths have space between the back molars and the back of their mouths. When they attack, and they seem to be postioning for a better grip, they are actually gathering flesh (or whatever they have hold of) in the back of their mouths, this in turn makes for a kind of locking mechanism. This is what I meant by locking jaws.

No other dog has this widening at the back of the mouth

There is anecdotal evidence - mostly from police officers who have had to resort to killing a pitbull during an attack - when they came to remove the dog from the object that it was biting they were unable to prize it off - this was before rigor mortis had set in.

if a human was shot in the head while biting something, the jaws would have to be pried apart.

"There is anecdotal evidence - mostly from police officers who have had to resort to killing a pitbull during an attack - when they came to remove the dog from the object that it was biting they were unable to prize it off - this was before rigor mortis had set in."

Riiight. So there are people out there walking around with a "pitbull" stuck to them?? (this is called sarcasm, people, look it up.)

Are you a police officer? Have you ever witnessed this? Have you ever attempted to PRY (not "prize", lol) a "pitbulls" mouth open?

Doubt it.

I asked for something very specific here - a LINK to a SCIENTIFIC STUDY that reported that "pitbulls" have "locking jaws".

There hasn't been a link posted because there is no such link, because there is no such thing as "locking jaws".

This is all very simple, people.

NO DOGS HAVE JAWS THAT LOCK....It is just a term commonly used to discribe the powerful jarws they do have though...A pitbulls does have more pounds per square inch of pressure...but they can be broken...with a braking stick...and alot of times water...I have owned several pitbulls. and been involved with clubs for them...I spent hours and days researching them...especially when i became pregnant with my 4 year old...I honeslty couldnt ask for a better dog...

putting a hose on a pitbull that is attacking will not stop it

"putting a hose on a pitbull that is attacking will not stop it"

lol. And you still haven't posted a link.

If you can't back up your claims with factual reports, your claims are completely moot.

and that is spelt "licensed veterinarian" (lol)

and it's not pry - it's prise or prize open (according to Oxford Wordfinder Dictionary)

If Pitbulls jaws dont lock. How come the term "breaking stick" is used in editorials about Pitbull attacks.

Im not going to go searching the internet and cut and paste studies and articles for you Caroline. Sorry, but I dont need to.

well hiddy where is the link that proves this...

yes you do need to...i want to see where it says that their jaw lock...you know why you aren't posting any links cause there are none that support what you believe...

The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of Pit Bulls show that , in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morpohology, is no different than that of any [other]breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to their structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier, says Dr. I. Lerh Brisbin of the University of Georgia (from the ADBA booklet, "Discover the American Pit Bull Terrier".)

Oh, and there are actual videos of Pitbull attacks on "youtube" but you have to be a member and over 18 to watch them

Name: I_love_pitbulls | Date: Oct 28th, 2006 12:05 AM
a video isn't a link to a study that was done...i can find a chihuahua attack if i wanted too...a pitbull attack doesn't prove anything...

Name: I_love_pitbulls | Date: Oct 28th, 2006 12:06 AM
oh by the way your little link doesn't work...lol...

It works for me.....shows, you know very little about computers, and Pitbulls

I'll register later. Right now I have to clarify the term "break stick"

Ahem...a break stick is used during a fight, regardless of breed, when both dogs have a good hold on each other. Now, obviously, the dog's jaws aren't locked, they simply have a good grip. It would be dangerous to try to break them up in any other way....hence, the stick! Tada! It has nothing to do with "locking jaws"...it has Everything to do with Safety

I_love_pitbulls is right Hiddy. You can just as easily find videos of attacks from a multitude of breeds online. The only debate that exists with the members and you is the fact that you think that ALL pitbulls are dangerous. How an animal behaves is not the result of their breed but the result of the manner in which their owner treated/raised them.
