What kind of training collars do you guys use? I have never been a fan of pincher collars or choke chains. I have been training my puppy Nika for awhile now, but she needs to learn her manners. The book I am currently reading, suggests using a Woodhouse collar. I haven't been able to find out an info about them on the interent. The book is called "Good Owners, Great dogs" Hopefully it will help!

Momof3 you dont need any specific collar for training. All you need is a simple every day dog collar! Training isnt about the collar, its about being confident and in controll.

You dont need to jerk a collar to demonstrate to your dog that he is not doing the proper command.

Also I dont know that there is a collar by that name. The book you have I believe was writen by Brian Kilcommon. If it is the same book, he speaks of training tecneaks he has learned from a trainer by the name of Barbara Woodhouse.

I think that is the author, but I am not sure, he does refer to Barbara Woodhouse alot. So far the book is great. It teaches you how to train the do, so the dog understands you. Using different tones of your voice, and your body lang./ I was going to get that book, by the Dog Whisper, that Caeser guy, but I read some bad reviews on his training techniques

The dog whisper has some real good methods but his techniques behind the scens are kinda harsh! He does know a lot about natural dog behavior. If you really want your dog to train well you have to know how to think like a dog. You have to have knowlage about how they live with in a pack.

The dog should always look to you for all his needs if you trully are the pack leader. If he sees you as a leader he will train much easier and faster!

My daughter trains people how to teach their dogs! She has not once touched the animal they respond to her as if she was another pack member! The reason the dogs respond so well to her is that she demands respect from the animal. They understand her language because she demonstraits it in a way they can undetrstand, in their language!

I would recommend Caesers book it has a lot of great dog insite. Info that you wont find in other books!

I watched his show a few times and I liked the idea of his theories. We do some of that now, little things, like we walk in the door first, we make them wait. They don't get their breakfast or dinner until we have eaten. Things like that.
Nika just needs to learn her manners, and she know her basics, sit, lie down, drop it, leave it. But she still licks people to death. She is VERY pushy about lickling people. She has scared a few people. And the big one for a dog that will be big, jumping one people!
I have been meaning to ask you, where did you daughter learn to train dogs?

Oh I just thought that I would share, I just emailed the shelter close by and offered to volunteer!
Do you have my space?

Part of you taking the alfa role is that you always lead, that means you always go first with them following! It is also the same with eating, no you dont have to literally eat first but you want the dog to think you are. These are all leadership rolls that a dog will recognise.

Most dogs are looking for a leader, they dont want to have to take the alfa roll! If they show leadership behavior thats because they dont think the pack is beeing cared for properly! They will only try to lead if they see they need to. If you are a good leader than the dog will back of and let you lead!

My daughter has had the knowlage for some years now. It hasnt been untill the past few years that she has actually worked with people on how to apply her techniques. Every thing she knows was self tought! She has not yet had a person come back or complain about her training yet! She has trained blind dogs deaf and blind dogs as well as aggressive dogs. Not to mention her own dog that she used a lot of the same methods as the whisper. Her dog is the best mannered dog I have ever personally seen! All because she demanded respect as well as alfa roll.

I also for got to mention, she does it all from a wheel chair! Thats why I told you she has never ever had to handle any of the dogs. She only instructs the owner and even then they them selfs dont have to touch the dog.

That is awesome. I watched a few more of his shows today, so maybe I will go that route, I have to do something though.

Momof3 are you looking for leash training or obediance training? There is so much to both but with both you have to astablish leadership!

The way we (my self & daughter) have gained leadership is through a few simple steps. They may to people sound mean but the dog understands what you are saying.

1) When comming in from out side and the dog comes running to you for attention DO NOT give it to him! Walk past him like he is not there. When he calms down and loses intrest in you then call him to you! In a pack the the alfa always initiates activity not the lower pack members.

2) At feeding prior to placing the bowl down to the floor pretend to eat some of his food. Be sure he sees this action! By doing this it shows him you are the leader. The pack alfa always eats first, he will recognise this as such!

3) Always make him go through doors or any openings after you! I know you said you didnt like this one but it is important with astablishing leader ship role. The reason for this is again the alfa ALWAYS goes first!

4) Never let him initiate play! If he comes to you with a toy DO NOT play! Only play with him when you want to, when you initiate it! This is showing him that he gets the attention when you give it to him not when he demands it!

As I said some will read this and say wow thats mean! It is not mean, it is assuming alfa role! If you dont have that status than he will! Also do not let him up on furniture such as couches or chairs. That will only make him level to you, use it as a dominent perching position.

Trust me all this works our dogs all love us and none have ever showed any dis like due to this method of training! We get nothing but respect from our animals! They all listen, come, sit, stay, down, eat, drink, and pee on command. Thats just to mention a few things they have learned!

Momof3 the most importand first step to training your dog is to have his attention! With out that it will be almost impossible to teach him.

The way I tell a person how to get their dogs attention is to place him/her on a short leash so that the dog cant roam around at the same time you have controll of him. Be sure to have plenty of small treats.

Call his name holding the treat at face level, as soon as he looks at you (good boy) give him a treat! Repeat this untill you can call his name and he looks directly at your face.

When he get so he looks every time than stop holding the treat at face level. He should still look at your face even with the treat not prescent. Once he has learned this you should only treat him some of the time. You dont want him to only do it because of the treat.

Now with his attention you can get started on more indepth training and get much better results as well.

So far today I have taken her outside and worked her 2. She doesn't do more than 5 minutes at a time. BUT, the last time, she did great at her sits, lay downs, and is starting to grasp "wait" . I feel that as long as I am able to keep her doing it, she will get it. I hate having to do it outside, but there are less distractions outside, than in. I will keep you all updated!

Thats good Momof3! Its good to work with her in distracting places that way when she does get it she will have no problem no matter where she is. I have seen so many people only work with their dogs in their homes then when they take them out the dog wont do any thing for them because 1 they are to distracted and 2 they only will do it at home where they were taught! So ya work with her any where in the pet store on the side walk and in the bath room! LOL!!!

The book by Brian Kilcommon specifically refers to the Barbara Woodhouse collar and says it has bigger links so the sound distracts the puppy from bad behavior. I too am shopping for one and haven't been able to find where to buy.

Momo, is that you? As in Lisa and Roman's friend? we just got a dog and I am doing research on training too. Got the "Good Ownwer's, Great Dogs" and was trying to locate a Woodhouse collar as well. Our new dog is about a year old and seems to have had some training already. We are trying to establish some groundrules for her; she already seems quite comfortable and secure with us so it''s time for some training.
Let me know if you are the Momo that got one of Dan's puppies!!
