i rescued a 10 year old lab crossed with a learcher in early April she is a lovely dog and i love her to bits she gets on with my kids soooo well and looks and behaves like a puppy (young dog), anyway i am having real problems with keeping her off the sofas and beds also she steels things from the kitchen oh and anotehr thing she howls, barks and wimpers when i leave the house for the whole time i am away (which my neighbours have commented on) she is deffo settled in here but i just dont know how to stop her, i mean i am sat up at the computer and she literly jumped onto the sofa while i was watching!!!! she knows she is not aloud on the sofa the amount of times she has been told off so i ran to her grabed her color (i did not hurt her) and pulled her off the sofa and pinned her down like wild dogs do and held my hand around her neck and grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrred at her, i have been told this is the best way to tell them off and its working a bit BUT SHE STILL DOES ALL THIS naughty behavour, can someone help me to stop all of these naughty things?

Have you tried taking her to obedience classes? She sounds the same as my Jack Russell did when he was bad! Then I took him on a 20-week obedience course, and hes been such a good dog since. No more barking, or destructive behaviour, no more jumping on sofas. I have a second dog and they are good friends; would you consider getting her a friend?

Dogs are only destructive and noisy when they are lonely. Although you are angry with her when she does naughty things, it's still a way of getting attention from you, which is all she wants. Unfortunately dogs want attention round the clock from their owners, and that's just no possible, which is why a second dog can be a good idea, as well as teaching her good manners, where she is rewarded for good behaviour, and punished accordingly for bad behaviour.

i agree with briseis, dogs strive for attention-negitive or positive. So when you pull her off the couch she is still getting what she wants, there for she will keep doing it. This might not work but my advice ot you is to find a buzz word like enough and everytime she gets on the couch say enough and walk out of the room. then come back in if she is still on the sofa say it again and walk out soon she will learn that she won't get your attention doing something bad. Sorry if this doesnt help, but it has worked on dogs in the past.

my landlord probaly wouldnt let me have another dog also she has a tendacy to havce a go at other dogs when we out for walks, but she was with dogs for most of her life according to the rescue cantre she came with 2 jack russels. I will look into rescuing another dog but it has to be the right one for me and the kids and Gemma But it will take some convincing to the land lord pmsl thanks for the advise much apreciated
i am planning to go to obediance classes but its rather late for the children and my brother wont have the children once a week (paini know) and htere is no one else to have them so they would have to come with me

Good! It's good for your kids to come with you. They can see how to handle a dog correctly. They could even try handling her herself. When I went to obedience classes with my Jack Russell, there were other people there with their dogs, and their kids.

i will go down on monday then see how it goes lol its a little late as my kids go to bed between 6 and 7 pm every evening and its a monday night between 6 and 7.30pm so by the time we have walked back home it will be late but it its good for the kids too and it helps Gemma then i think its worth the kids having as late night

Can you let me know how it goes? My daughter is a dog fanitic, and watches animal planet a lot. She's the one who gave me the buzz word idea-she said that she saw it on a show called it's me or the dog. She would be really intrested if you could share how the training went. Shes only 12 though so you dont have to recite every detail!
Thanks!

Best thing is taking the dog to classes and you be in them too....you need to learn how to communicate with your dog and so does your whole family...consistancy is key to success.

I just read more in the comments.....DO NOT RUN AT THE DOG.....YOUR MAKING IT A GAME!!!!!!! They are just like having a kid. In the situation with the food being eaten off the table you should of walked over calmly, grabbed the collar, swatted the nose with a newspaper, said a very stern no and bad dog and walked her over to her bed for a time out and said STAY. Also don't hit the dog with your hand....your hands are for affection giving and love so if they are used for hitting the dog will cower when petted.

dont do that it will hurt your dogs feelings, the best way to settle her is to play with her for about an hour or 2 and give her treats if she doesnt respond to that take her to the local park and let her play with some other dogs. from katie cutie
