I don't think so. I have 3 and am getting a fourth and mine are perfect family dogs. Technically my lab still lives with my mom and when I come home to visit he alternates between sleeping with me and the rest of the family.

I do have to ask though... what breed of dog do you have? If it is a bully breed I recommend having only ONE if you have children. Bully breeds can be very dog aggressive and if your child gets in the middle of their dog fight he or she can become severely injured.

If the dogs are not trianed to know YOU and your family are the pack leaders, they can form a pack, but then again, theres cases where people only have one dog and the dog rules the people. Fact is, once a dog enters the house they are in a pack, your pack. Just remember to keep your dog at a level below you, not equal to you because once they feel they have the same rites as you they tend to test it. JMO

either way, the key point is to know your dog. Not all dogs, of any breed like haveing other dogs in teh house and like being solo.

BULLY BREEDS ARE DANGEROUS AROUND CHILDREN

gotta pipe in here. I have, at any givin time three pit bulls in my house. I have at ALL times four kids running, screaming, playing and fighting all over my house. Not once have I ever had any of my dogs get out of line with my kids, either from them running past where they are laying or when the dogs are playing/eatting get snippy with my kids. Granted, not every pit bull can be in the same room with another dog, you cant advoid their history, but there are many that can live in a multi dog house hold and be with kids and go threw the noise and be a safe dog. That is what you call a sound dog. Did I mention I allso have three parrots and a cage of parakeets to add into the noise? If you know how to read your dog for any signs of stress and aggression then you can have more then one dog in a house and have kids running afoot. Its a rule of thumb with all dogs.

Hiddy some can be yes, just as you mentioned the maltiese beeing tormented will provoke them to become agressive, it is the same for the Pit. Not every single pitbull is aggressive towards people. Yes you are correct in saying some are! and I dont see that any one is saying evey single Pit bull is like owning a fluffy bunny. It would be fulish and nieve to say they are all wonderfull, on the other end of the stick...... it would be equally nieve to think evey one is dangerous and horrible.

well we had a german sheppard / lab cross
most would say this is a gentle great family dog, and he was a great dog, but would not let anyone in my home, and one day snapped as a warning to my babygirl, so we had to put her down.
I do not think that this is just a certain breed- talking about other posts in here as well, it is the individual dog.
The older my dog got the more agressive he became.
All dog breeds can be agressive, you will find some one who has been attacked by almost every breed there is.

Hiddy, why are you so angry about these posts?

you really need to start paying more attention to what people are posting on here. I do beleive I posted before that pit bulls were bred to fight. Yes, I do beleive I did say that.

I do have to say that your statement saying my post was bull crap came across with a little bit of a panic/rage. mabe its because you are seeing that alot of people are houseing theese "savage beasts" in their house with kids and reading how they have been raised up with infants and tots and reading how the kids can be kids around them scres you? I don't know, Who knows. But hey, we are all intitled to our oppion. Mabe what you need to do is write/email a few people that have had and been around this breed for 50 plus years and ask them their input on it all. Or mabe you need to get ahold of some top vets here in the states and get their feed back. I mean after all, they are teaching the vets of tomorrow and they will know what they are talking about. if you would like I could give you the number of my vet, how teaches classes at MSU and hear what he has to say about the breed.

Candy I dont think it will matter what any one says, or how much factual info is posted. She knows she doesnt like the breed, to her thats all that matters! there for she will not reason with facts.

I would suggest sticking with one. One's enough to make you happy :)

sorry Lindalu,
didn't mean too.....

Bully breeds are just as dangerous as any other breed around children. Get it straight idiot.

Name: Tiffany_SPCA | Date: Oct 18th, 2006 12:41 AM
Also I have already told you what breeds I have so try paying attention.

Name: Tiffany_SPCA | Date: Oct 18th, 2006 6:19 AM
You are SUCH an idiot Hiddy. You really need to do your research. Dogs are pack animals. However the HUMAN is the leader of the pack. THAT is why they are called DOMESTICATED animals. Too bad that proves that you haven't taken a course in animal genetics OR behavior because that would have been covered.

Name: Hiddy | Date: Oct 18th, 2006 6:32 AM
Your an joke Tiffany

1. I didnt dispute that dogs are pack animals
2. A Human can be the pack leader, yes Tiffany, even if you have more than 1 Dog. Stop putting words in my mouth...moron

3. Two dogs will keep each other company. If you work during the day and their is no one home, two dogs will be happier than 1 on its own

Name: Bindi | Date: Oct 18th, 2006 10:58 AM
you shouldnt worry about it to much if you bring them up to show them that your the pack leader you should be fine my sister at the moment has 2 pits and that works fine

Name: NoahsMama06 | Date: Oct 18th, 2006 5:05 PM
We've got 2 dogs and they are good with the baby, but it all depends on if you have time for more than one dog and if you want your house turned upside down when they want to play lol... my dogs run like crazy

Name: lindalu | Date: Oct 18th, 2006 5:47 PM
All dogs are pack animals! If you have a dog living with you, you or your family then you and your family are part of his pack. The leader is deturmined by dominance! When you the leader assumes the lead, he must be more dominant! that means you have to know dog behavior body gestures and poise. If you dont then he will assume the position, in every pack there has to be a leader to keep order with in the pack. If he feels you can not controll the pack he will attempt to take charge.

My daughter self trained her doberman to assist her with retreavel issues. He was a shelter dog who didnt even know his name, he now will not eat drink or poop unless she tells him he can. When I tell you that I am not exagerating, he will not do any thing untill she gives him the ok! She assumed the domanent position as soon as she brought him home. She will comand him to down, he will stay down all day if she didnt release him. He is so content with the job he performs we take him to an agility course, where we work out all his energy. All large dogs performed certaint jobs some would work farms others would guard. Today they still have that instinct to work and a working dog is a happy dog.

You are right Hiddy you didn't. I was reading your post as a sarcastic one. Under that impression I responded. However... I'm AN joke? Learn to spell. Anyway... she is entitled to get whatever breed of dog she wants. However around kids, no I don't recommend more than one bully breed. A dog however does not need a friend to keep them company through out the day.

what breeds would be safest around very young kids?

Name: T-rabbit | Date: Oct 26th, 2006 5:57 PM
I had 3 shepard/akitas as a teen. W e lived in the country when the dogs would go in the woods they would chase deer. T hey would act as a pack to bring down a deer. The female that was the oldest was the alfa. I have took three dogs for a walk with my hubby at once had a husky run up trying to attack us. We had to drag the dogs off one by one tie them up and take the husky home. So yes I belive multiple dogs lead to pack behavior. But you decide for yourself.

We have six dogs and none of them act as a pack. So I wouldn't worry. Get as many as you can afford and are comfortable with.

Tiffany,

Dogs do not NEED another dog to keep them company, I never said they NEEDED another dog. But how would YOU like to be alone all the time? If you work a 9-5 job, 7 days a week, I advise to have 2 dogs.

Also. Dogs ARE pack animals, but they can tell the difference between humans and dogs. You might be the dominant one in the household, but they will still have a pecking order among themselves.
