hi i'm from the sahm forum and i just took in this very sweet older pit. she has been very neglected and really needs a loving family.
my question is
are all pits shy at first? she hasn't offered o be mean at all with my kids but she is very timid and laid back.
she is very well behaved though she will not jump up on you unless you tell her too. she won't come inside unless told to either. how do i get her to be less shy with us? and is there anything special that a pit needs?
i'm not familiar with the medical aspect of the breed. actually this the first pet i have owned since i was a child lol. but i just couldn't resist her sad face! she looked sooo lonely

She may not be shy apose to beeing submissive, she just might view you as a leader. You dont want to chang that just be kind to her letting her learn she can trust you! If you can achieve trust that she will come around.

alright! i got a response! LOL
well i'm not quite sure if she just doesn't like my kids or what but she doesn't sem to pay much attention to them. me on the other hand...she follows me around like a lost little puppy lol
it's cute but dang! i can't even go to the bathroom! LOL
my kids are pretty small though only 3 and 4 years old. they adore sassy and love on her and sometimes she will lick them and so that kind of tells me she just doesn't like to play maybe. the only time i have seen this dog run is when she is outside and i go and call her name LOL

Just be kind and gentle. She will grow more comfortable with time.

yes she seems to be coming around and getting use to us
what are some good signs that she doesn't like what you are doing to her? she hasn't growled at us but i want to keep it that way lol

Give her some time and you will learn to read her body language. Just keep in mind that mothers need a break once in a while from the kids as do our k-9 friends.

HDC from what you have said she sound like a great dog! I wouldnt encourage the children to play with her just yet, let the dog come around on her own!

A well trained dog will do nothing if they dont like some thing, the most that should do is walk away. unless they have been hurt, then depending on the degree of pain they may growl or even bit!

I wouldnt worry about her reacting to some thing she doesnt like. It sounds to me that you are doing every thing ok! Nothing that should spark an agressive behavior!

Keep us posted on her progress! And remember kindness with a lot of treating will go a long way!

sassy is doing GREAT with my family! she lets the kids love on her and all that good stuff lol. i let them give her treats every now and then. and she is very gentle when taking it from them! she is the best!! i have noticed if she doesn't like what they are doing to her she will look at me with this sad face like she is saying "help me!!" lol it's too cute! but i really do think she is going to be an excellent companion for us! i will keep you posted! =))

pits are very excellent dogs and are very very passive/timid and are well behaved. To have her become more active and less shy u need to take her out and have her socialize with other ppl. Not to have her around alot of dogs or larger dogs than her. Have her always beside u and allow her to gently open up
Be very careful on the cleaning of their ears and they need alot of attention. Food BENIFULL is a great dog food and they eat lots

Shyster
Do you feed your dog Bennifull? That food is ok for a grocery store brand but it still has a lot of fillers and addatives. There are much better brands with less of the addatives on the market. With a better brand food your dog will eat less because there is less fillers.
