My 2 year old son doesn't seem to understand any simple instructions. If I ask him to bring me his cup or shoes or anything he doesn't respond. He only says a few words like hi, bye, bye, thankyou, and oh no. If I try to get him to say anything he just gets frustrated. He will start seeing a speech therapist next friday. What could be wrong? Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

What do the hearing tests show? What percentage is the hearing loss if there is any. I have 2 cousins who were born deaf and both life very productive lives and learned to speak as well as sign. It is frustrating for both of you but don't give up hope. get in touch with the hearing society if he is in fact deaf. It may be something else that is wrong. You really need to know exactly what you are dealing with. After the tests are done I recommend that you try Anat Baniel Method for Children. Check it out online. If you are within traveling distance to Toronto ON there will be a Free Children's Clinic on Oct. 17. My therapist works with one family who have one deaf child and one blind one. There are other FCCs around.Check for someone close to you who does the method . I have seen many kids make great progress! It has certainly helped me. I would be in a wheelchair without it. In the US check Anat's site-www.anatbanielmethod.com/, in Canada check www.uptownstudio.ca ,also www.freechildrensclinic.org/ This therapy works with the person's brain. It is useful for any situation regardless of the disability. If I had been aware of this therapy when I was working with all those kids in special needs day care I'd have sent all the parents to get this treatment for their children. I am not aware of anything that is as good.

Well, yes...I have in fact experienced this first hand.

First off, when my son wasn't responding early on, I of course assumed he wasn't hearing me. I had his hearing checked and it turned out he was hearing me just fine...just not processing the information.

Having an idea of what else could be going on with him, I went on-line and looked into the possible reasons and realized I was right about my gut instinct. I'm not suggesting this is the case with your son, only something worth looking into...

I printed out checklist and went about observing my son's behaviours and out of a possible 21 symptoms for Autism, he displayed about 19.

The good news...we caught it early and were able to begin early intervention. Again, this was over a year before he was officially diagnosed. By the time the doctors finally saw and diagnosed him, at age three, his 19 symptoms had reduced to 11.

The key is early intervention, he's now 12 and doing wonderfully...still autistic but high functioning...

Get your son checked early, you have nothing to lose and whole world of development to gain.
