Hi,

I'm not actually a mother but am currently employed as a teacher to a child with problems in gross motor control coupled with poor sensory development (hyposensitive towards external stimuli?). The child (8 years old) is unable to communicate verbally. Conversations with the mother have revealed that the child has undergone extensive physiotherapy and exceeded expectations by being able to walk (doctors said he never would at birth). He has also been toilet trained and is able to point when he needs to go.

My job is to assist with language acquisition. Experimentation with alphabet models, tracing and the dot-to-dot technique of drawing lines to make up an alphabet have not been fruitful in the past 2 weeks and I was wondering if there were mothers in similar situations with other ideas.

Other information about him:
He has aggressive tendencies and will swing at myself or other teachers after about 10-15 minutes of class time (I am trying to resolve this by stopping just short of 10 minutes and allowing him a break before he gets aggressive).
He enjoys visual puzzles and is able to match shapes into spots they fit into.
He shows aggressiveness towards some other children for no discernable reason (Pulls their hair or hits them without taking their toys and when neither child is shown extra or less attention by others)
Does not imitate facial expressions of others (Smiling, etc.) but is able to smile to show his own pleasure.
Sensory seeking behavior (Rubs objects on forehead and forearms, inserts objects into mouth, makes loud noises with external objects, etc.)
Understands that punishments (timeout, withholding object of interest) are only temporary and constantly repeats aggressive behavior.

Thank you in advance,
Male teacher
