I started to notice something was wrong with my son at a very early of 18 mos. High pain tolerance and being mean to his baby sister. Then poor eye contact and ignoring me when his name was called, his speech was delayed. I took him to his first doctor which he was diagnoised with autism by the time I took him to another doctor his eye contact improved and now more alert when you call his name. The second doctor said no to autism because of the eye contact. But he has all the signs of autism he turns in circle, no social skills, he is constantly beating up my older kids biting them and scratching them. Is it possible that he has autism? Any suggestions?

have you had his hearing checked recently? communication gaps can cause behavior and social issues. he already has several symptoms, hearing loss needs to be detected by doc or audiologist who can do an OAE test and an ABR if necessary. He may be more alert when calling his name because you've adjusted your voice over time. my kids are both deaf. www.deafkidscanhear.blogspot.com

check into apraxia, sometimes kids communicate through behaviour to tell us what is wrong, its very frusterating, so many things resemble so much of the same symptoms, if not happy with diagnosis then go with your gut feeling and persue other avenues, you no my son use to hit people for no reason from age of 18months to age four till i realized it was happening when people were in his personal space once i clued in and tught him to move back or ask other children to back up he seemed better. also i could never stick anyone beside him in a vehicle as he would just clock them one for no reason. this all stop once i figured out the personal space issue and sent him to social skills programs, he too never had much and still has little eye contact and went for testing and came back adhd and odd, and auditory processing dificulty. good luck

i forgot to mention sometimes when their speech is delayed its hard for them to express them selves so they will resort to behaviour, have you tried using pictures for him to point at , and maybe a little sign language till he gets better with his words to help with communicating insted of hurting others, hiope this was helpful.

Yes his hearing is fine! what I don't understand is why the hand flapping and toe walking ? Yes it does make sense about the personal space because no one can sit beside of him in the car. But he has anger issues bad if he gets frustrated about something he wants to hit someone. I don't undrestand about the sensory issues he is having ? I am about to pull my hair out!!!

Hi LeAnn, my 4 yr old is also autistic, it sounds to me (and i am by no means qualified here) that he sooooo badly needs to see an O.T. The sensory issues can be huge and complex and they are very good at helping you to help him.

Hi leann,

Some kids with higher functioning autism and aspbergers syndrome do make eye contact. Not all autistic children make all contact and some do. I have 3 kids with autism, one severe and 2 high functioning. I would go back to the first doctor and get him re evaulated or find a completely new specialist such as a developmental pediatician, child pyschologist, a nearby university hospital ? Good luck.
