As a parent of a child with special needs what is your outlook on the best education for your child? Do you feel inclusive education works best or do you feel your child needs to attend a school that specifically works with your child's need?

My daughter has always been in public education. Her cognative skills were always above average so for her there was no need to have her placed in a special school for children with spinal cord defects.

I do believe that if your child is blind or has a certaint disability that the school can not properly educate the child, then yes the child should be placed in a school that can educate him/her properly.

My son has attended a special nursery for 12 months and i couldn't be happier with the progress he has made. This experience has made me look at sending him to special school, despite my original reservations. (I always said i would never send him to special school but i look at his needs and the fact that specialist education is meeting them more than adequately). However each child is different and you need to be aware of what your child needs from his/her education. Knowledge is power and you need to visit all the schools you can and ask lots of questions. You will know when you find the right one. I'm lucky to have found a fantastic special school for my son - he will be in a class of four with two teachers. I will never rule out the possibility of him being part of inclusive/mainstream education, but i know its just not right for him at the moment. Its a really big decision to make, but as long as your childs needs are being met and is happy, you will be doing the right thing. Good luck.

Do whatever you are comfortable with.Just make sure you get to know your teachers well.I used to work in a special ed classroom and was HORRIFIED at some of what I saw going on there.Children being hit, slapped, hair pulled, not fed, etc. It was pretty bad.I was threatened if I ever told and finally they asked me to leave because they knew one more incident and I would cause hell for the entire school. It was a public school by the way.
