My daughter is 2 years old, she was born with one club foot- her left. We began casting when she was 5 days old, going once a week until she was three months old. From then we went to Boots and bar she wore 23 out of 24 hours a day until she started walking at about 12 1/2 months. Now we put the boots on her during the day, using the bar only at nap times and a couple hours when she goes to bed. We have been having trouble keeping her in her left shoe, the clubfoot. She keeps slipping out of it. I am wondering if anyone has any tips to keep the boots on, or if there are any other boots she could be wearing with the bar- currently we have the white open toed, straight laced orthopaedic shoes the doctors prescribed, but I have seen slightly different "sandal" type shoes with more straps, are these acceptable?

Go back to your orthopedic people and they should be able to add calf skin ( I think it is called) along the heel which should prevent her getting out of the boot. The other thing I was told was if they keep getting out of the shoe the shoe might be too small.
Hope that helps

Tricia, thanx for the reply, we actually have tried the calf skin, I think our nurse called it "mole skin" but I'm sure it's the same thing. We just got a wider bar and larger size of shoe and still the same thing. The other shoes I have seen online are called Mitchell shoes, and I am going to ask the doctor when we go back next week, if maybe these would be an option for us.

you can see a great description and information regarding the Mitchell shoes for clubfoot correction at http://six-feet.com. I use the Mitchell's on two of my children, I highly recommend them!

Have you thought of wearing special braces for her feet or special shoes?

Its not the boots its the bar. Try the Dobbs Bar, it will let you little one move their legs independently. The hinged bar keeps the child from locking one leg and pulling out of the shoe with the other foot. Since the brace will now move with her feet. Your child will be much happier and it works. www.dobbsbrace.com

I also heard and am shortly going to be trying the mitchell shoes with the dobbs bar,... apparantly the two together are great.... will let you know more when we get them... the only problem is ordering them and getting them... the mitchell shoes can be ordered by anyone, however the dobbs bar must be ordered from the store that your orthopedist deals with.

My daughter is wearing the Ponseti Sandals to correct her feet and they are the only ones her Physiotherapist will recommend for that reason, you can secure them better on the feet and also watch their toes for circulation. Also, much better for summer months, the feet can breath.

I recommend them highly.
