Hello, I am a elementary education student and for one of my classes I am taking I was assigned to log onto a chat room and discuss topics of importance with families that have children with special needs. Some of the questions are the effects of child disability on the family? Also, how is collaboration between family and teachers? Thank you for your time.

My sister, she's actually my twin, is disabled from the waist down, due to a car accident when we were ten. Honestly, I think the effects vary with the kid. If Jamie had been disabled from the neck down, things would be very different. She wouldn't be going to school for instance. If she had sustained brain damage, things would be extremely different.

But nevertheless there are still very evident effects that are felt. For example she needs constant care and I am her caretaker, meaning i have to help her shower and use the restroom and such.

I'd be happy to discuss this with you further. You can email me at: [email protected]

Hi, my son has down syndrome. He brings such joy to our family and has taught us to appreciate the little things in life. Things do get stressful now and then but all the love and affectionate we receive from him out weighs the rest. He most definitely is my Angel from God. I communicate on a daily basis with his teacher in a notebook, along with his therapists in school. If need be, we will also communicate by phone as to how he is doing in school and at home. Good luck with your class.
