i started babysitting my brother and sister when they were babies when i was 8. LOL .. i babysat my infant cousin when i was 16, and her stepsister who was 6 at the time. i did that from 430am-6pm everyday for 3 months. i think it honestly depends on the type of person she is.

i would let my sister watch my son when they were 14..they did fine for the most part..

ahh...me personally if oliver was 5 1/2 i wouldnt let anyone under 18 babysit him..i can tell already that kid is going to be trouble

But i guess if your child has no special needs...generally well behaved and you dont have to worry about her...maybe a 16-17 year old.

You just gotta pick the right girl..one that is going to know the difference between right and wrong

Well, there is a really sweet girl at our church who is 12 years old and wanting to baby sit. She asked me about it today and I kind of told her I thought she needed to wait until next year when she was 13. The responsibility & emergency awareness is my concern ya know. That's why I wanted to see what yall thought

i let my 12 yr old sister and 14 yr old brother keep an eye on him like when i run into the store, or go out to smoke, or need a small break, but not long period of times. but then again my son is only 6 wks, not 5.5 yrs old.. but it depends on the kid, if they are well behaved or will give the sitter a run for their money.

i also babysat my neighbors two kids when i was 13. they were 3 and 5. i would watch them for about 6 hours a night when the parents went to drink or something, and honestly, i was a bad sitter. lol i made sure they were alright, but i would make them go to bed early so i didnt have to share the tv LOL

My son is only 6 months old, but I have never left him with anyone other than his dad and that was for less than an hour. I guess if he had an older sibling and there was that age difference, maybe, but I don't trust anyone with him. No one cares for him like I do.

Randi - I would never have left my daughter with anyone but my mom when she was a baby. Heck, I didn't even want my hubby to keep her, lol.

My MIL tried to look after him when she was here last month so I could sleep and I didn't even like that. I wasn't even in bed for 20 minutes haha. I don't like it at all. He is so attached too... I can't leave his sight without him crying. He is great with stranger and other people (all the cashiers and stuff want to hold him when I am shopping and we go to swimming lessons and for coffee with friends almost everyday) but only if I am in his sight.

to me depends on her ability to watch kids :-)

some girls are better at it than others. Ones with common sense.

questions.......what do you do if ....
they have a temperature
start crying uncontrollably
wont go to bed
they have fallen over and hit their head ...there no blood...what signs to do look out for.
or they are unconcious who do you ring......(this is a biggy!!!...the one you want to here is 911 and THEN the parents...precious minutes count)

i was babysitting for driving lessons at 12 regularly, not just one kid either....would range from 3mths to 4years.....sometimes older. i was a common sense child...although happy to say no one hurt on my watch....LOL

Good questions to ask marija - I really don't know alot about this girl other than she is quiet but she plays with my daughter when we have fellowships at our church and she is very sweet. Just curious as to whether I was wrong to tell her that or not. She is trying to get money for her camps and stuff.

no not wrong what so ever..i think thats a little too young IMO. Can she do something else? do a few odd jobs around your house..that you can give her a little bit of $$ for?

Wash your car...stuff like that

I thought about that! I need to do some things outside & I thought about letting her come over and entertain my daughter inside & see how she does. That way I am at the house and I can still pay her : )

hey shelby....to me its not about age its about common sense......I cant leave my 16yo to watch a rock?!?!....it would be broken when i got home :-|
you could try having her watch your babe WHILE you are home?

Set yourself up in the bedroom with drink and book..keep cell ph on vibrate.....Instructions not to enter the room and leave all the nessecary phone numbers. Tell her to go outside and play and you will be back in a hour ....then go read your book and LISTEN.....the tone of talk can give you a great picture :-)
if all you hear is playing and laughing ....you have a great babysitter for a couple of hours...if you hear alot of argueing or yelling....then interrupt and thank her for her time....you now know she is not able to babysit.
Remember night time babysitting is EVEN easier...especially if you have a sleeper ....and your worried ...put bubs to sleep first and just check in every hour.

oh....you just lulled me out for a moment - "sitting in my room, RELAXING with a book" OK - I have to zap back to reality, lol
Sounds like a great idea. I know our neighbor has a 10 year old and when they get together to play they argue constantly & it gets on my nerves so bad. I see what you are saying about listening!
