To put some lime on olivers hands so he stops shoving them in his mouth?

I know he is teething..and he wants them in there - but he also chokes himself sometimes..its a frightening sound i hate it! and he knows i come rushing to him when he does it..so i think the lil devil is doing it on purpose now to get attention.

So the other day i got a little bit of lime and put it on his finger tips...he tried to shove them in his mouth again..and he pulled the most horrible face! but he didnt put his hands back into his mouth until i decided to wipe it off with warm water...( he maybe had it on there for 5 minutes? )

I was almost thinking of doing itt again..but i thought i should ask first..i dont know if its cruel or wrong..? anyone else got a opion on it

i dunno sarah, i haven't had to do it because kaitlen doesn't shove her hand that far down. maybe give him a rattle instead so he puts that in his mouth instead

I don't think it will hurt him, just make sure he has something else to suck/chew on and it's ok.

I don't think so. My daughter bites her nails and I tried that nail biter stuff, well she got used to it, so watch out....he'll probably end up just liking limes!

just keep handing him stuff. eventually he'll get the hand eye coordination he needs to put EVERYTHING w/in reach in his mouth. will he take a pacifier? i bet it's just that he wants to suck on something

AyameM--Why are you always so vile?

oral exploration is a key developmental stage. Putting toys and other household objects in her mouth allows her to discover the taste and texture of different objects.
Mouthing objects can also be a sign that her first tooth may be ready to surface. Although most babies cut their first tooth around 7 months, some can start as early as 3 months. When this happens, you'll notice your child drooling a lot and constantly putting things in her mouth. Kids usually feel some discomfort when a tooth tries to break through the gum surface. Rubbing a hand or toy against her gums helps soothe them.

Thats from baby centre.com

I was told not to stop my son from doing this by his doctor. It helps improve coodination and is important for sensory development.

ayame you must be talking from your own childhood experience.

Name: AyameM | Date: Apr 17th, 2007 1:25 AM
If I was talking about myself, I would have said, "i". No, I said YOU, retard.

And I'm "vile" because I can be.

ayame yes you are talking about yourself.

I agree with Randi, Kaitlen has only just started getting better coordination to put toys and teethers in her mouth. Don't try and stop him from sucking on her hands and fingers unless it really is choking him

Oh really AyameM--I thought it was because you have no class!

Yea it is cruel, just take his hands out of his mouth.

Sissy will stop sucking her thumb on her own when she is ready. I gave it up around 5 : )

I remember having all kinds of things put on my thumb to make me stop. Duct tape, bitter tasting stuff, even a good slap or two never made me stop. My teeth are perfectly straight so why not let her have her little thumb : ))

Randi is right its good for sensory development. As he gets older he wont do it so much, Dylan still has a chock every now and then on a finger.

AyameM--you say you talk like this because you can and you don't do it in real life. Well--I still think it is because you have no class. That is the image you portray on this forum. I can post a whole page with vile comments like the one below which you have written. It absolutely is a byproduct of having no class!

Dina it's cruel that you were accidentally kept. Your mothers home abortion didn't work so she had no choice but to keep a disease ridden ugly daughter. That's why you were kept in the basement your entire life.

Looks like you came in under a new name.

I would put tart or sour things on my daughters fingers and hands just to see her facial expressions after she tasted it. There is nothing more funny than to see the sour face on your little one after they tast pickel juice on their hands. LOL!! If you do, be sure to have the camera handy to catch the expression.

Yeah....but the thing with Lime is....if you put it on a cut...it stings...like lemon juice...

and if the baby is teething and puts it in their mouths....it will sting.

I wouldnt do it...

I would be afraid of the acid in the lime juice hurting his skin too. Try Vanilla extract.. smells good tastes really really nasty.

My son used to suck on his toes... He would gag himself every once in a while... Scary sounds...

Name: bmes | Date: Apr 17th, 2007 11:23 PM
yeah, i'd just let him chew and suck on his hands. cause what if he rubs his eyes with the lime on there? OWIE!!!!

Anika used to gag herself too, but she eventually got over it! :-)

My daughter does the same thing and all you can do is remove his hands from his month when you see him shoving them in. My daughter is currantly teething and she doesn't like to have anything in her month either. But I did find that she will chew on one of the vibrating teethers. Also since he is teeth try massaging his gums since this will also help his little teeth break through and relieve the little guy of some of the discomfort.

Name: ProudMomOfTwo | Date: Apr 17th, 2007 11:43 PM
I should mention though that if he already has teeth you may want to skip the massaging of the gums because those little baby teeth hurt.
